I have a pair of vintage Sony MDR-W15 with drivers that don't work. Likely originally came with my mother's Sony Sports Walkman.
- Infinite resistance at plug. So I disassembled body to get to the back of the drivers.
- Infinite resistance on cable solder pads on driver PCB.
- Scratched new material near voice coil solder pads.
- Still infinite resistance.
- Went to work bench with stereo microscope.
- Scraped away adhesive holding voice coil wires but didn't find any copper.
- Disassembled driver completely and found the wires inside the diaphragm but looks like they disintegrated due to some kind of reaction with the adhesive holding them down
- Second driver I knew what I was looking for and began scraping away the adhesive.
- Found one side intact and one side half gone.
- Soldered some iPhone trace repair wire to the end of the voice coil wire and onto the pad
- Measures out at 33ohm
Need to probably secure the wire if I wanted to permanently fix it. Possibly replace with something a bit larger diameter than 0.02mm. The other driver's membrane tore trying to retrieve the wires so I need to replace them both! They measure 13.5-13.65mm in diameter with my cheap digital caliper.
It's amazing that the original wires test good on these.
Also weird is the red jelly like adhesive holding the wires to the diaphragm. It literally is like really sticky jam
