Hey friends. Long time lurker, and big fan.

I’m curious… I’m thinking about upgrading to a pair of March Audio Sointuva’s with a plan to power them with a Topping LA90.

But I’m curious about the differences between versions. I know what the differences are between the WG and AWG are on paper. But practically, is it worth getting the AWG over the WG, especially if I could get the WG for potentially less money?

Thanks for any insight!

I am not sure about the differences in specs but I remember reading about the space where the wires went into the cabinet on the WG. I would be extremely cautious about either with the cabinet cracks and them using wood throughout on some models. The AsciLabs looks much more robust, really close if not better in terms of performance, and for less money.

From their site: "We are very excited to present an update to our award winning Sointuva WG speaker. The new AWG variant now features Purifis’ incredible PTT6.5W04-NAA-07 aluminium woofer which provides even lower bass extension and distortion compared to the previous fibre/polypropylene variant previously used in the WG."

According to my opinion the Purifi is a much better driver so it's worth getting the AWG over the WG.

Are you sure the topping has enough power to drive them, they are low sensitivity.

If it has to be Topping, two LA90 discrete in mono mode would be my choice. And I would avoid a solid wood enclosure due to the mentioned risk of cracking...I would buy the AWG model but Ascilabs A6B seems to tick the same boxes: waiting for third party measurements on them.

People! This is why I enjoy this forum. Did not know about the AsciLabs till these posts. The A6B Active seems up my alley, may be worth waiting for it.

As for the topping, I forgot that its power is pretty low. Neeevermind about that.

It's right around the corner too, you shouldn't be waiting long. I think it's going to really impact a lot of other companies. They are offering what appears to be a truly great product at all the correct price points. Kii and D&D should be lowering prices because I see no reason to even consider their products. The Kii is really too much when you consider their drivers aren't state of the art and D&D much like the AWG is prone to cracking. I love the look of wood finishes, but there is no way around environmental changes.

Only one pair of the what seventy pairs of 8Cs we have sold have ‘cracked’ and they belonged to @Dialectic of this very forum so hardly prone to cracking.
But the Ascilab speakers appear to be extremely promising, can’t wait for them to arrive.

Wood cracks. Mine cracked along the joint within the first few months and the distributor told me to care for them like fine furniture with a humidifier in the room to prevent the wood from drying out. There are other cases out there using google and they even mention it on their own website. The Sointuva should be on most people's short list but the wood version would be a worry magnet. The 8Cs are solid wood too.

Are there products you don't carry that you like because I have never seen you call out any drawbacks to what you stock?

The 8Cs have an inner and outer enclosure, the outer is ‘solid’ oak, I can only report on my experience, which is one pair, which D&D replaced immediately. I would never tell a customer that they needed to be treated like ‘fine furniture’ ( however you treat fine furniture) I appreciate there are climates which are not as temperate as the UK’s.

The distributor for D&D said that. I am assuming if they say it's coming directly from the manufacturer.

That’s incorrect information. The bracing, both internal, front and back are ply, but the sides are solid wood which is on the inside and out. You can see it here and others have raised concerns. This is to say the speaker sounds and performs incredibly well. I am only talking about durability where a lot is left to be desired. Aluminum and AsciLab designs are much more worry free IMO.
