MAC OSX Sequoia + Rogue Amoeba SoundSource Issues

SoundSource has been pretty okay for me, right up until I upgraded from 5.6 to 5.7.1. Now it's a sh*tshow.

I'm on Sonoma 14.6.1. I use Airpods and switch devices a lot.

It frequently gets in a broken state, and macOS hangs up on applications waiting to play audio; i.e. YouTube videos fail to start playing, with no user feedback.

It will be a shame if Rogue Amoeba can't sort this out; I already tried and gave up on Sound Control.
I just uninstalled Soundsource because of this. Hopefully a new version that works comes out soon. I’m using 5.7.1

Rogue Amoeba today sent me a press release which should have gone to all subscribers, saying inter alia they are now updated for Sequoia. Other fixes include solutions for the permissions on install problems.

We will see

I'm still on Sonoma and ARK is definitely the culprit. I also use their Loopback app (as an occasional alternative to Blackhole) and it's messed up too totally screwing up my audio routing. No big deal right now, if I listen to the big speakers running through proper DSP then I merely quit Soundsource but it's a pain. Everything was fine until I tried the upgrade that came out yesterday, the previous version with ACE still works fine. I've no need for any of the BT upgrades so will hope for the best that Apple and Rogue Amoeba will figure it out.

Rogue Amoeba sent me the note below last week in response to me pointing out that Roon (exclusive mode) and SoundSource 5.7.0 don't play well together. 5.7.1 didn't fix, but Rogue Amoeba is usually very attentive to these types of issues so fingers crossed a fix is on the way ...

Thanks for getting in touch with us. We're aware of issues with audio handling in MacOS when these media player apps have their "exclusive mode" enabled. We're investigating this further to see what our options are, but for now your best bet is to disable that from Roon.

I can report that the latest versions, even 5.7.1, are horrible, with either the previous or the current MacOS'es. It's unstable and often doesn't work at all :( I even had sound completely hanging, and even restarting the sound daemon didn't help, so a reboot was the only thing fixing it (also happened on both MacOS versions).

After years of stable operation, this is quite a disappointment.

I had to stop using it because of the new audio handling and constantly showing the purple dot on the edge of my screen. eqMac seems to be working fine on sequoia, I will test it for a bit and maybe buy a pro license.

At one point the software slowed by mac Mini m2 to a crawl with the beachball constantly going. I uninstalled it as it created nothing but problems with latest Mac software

Didn't this company check the beta versions of the mac software for possible problems???? Jeez.

Running Sequoia and SS 5.7.1 Don't use bluetooth from my laptop. Wanted to do an REW measurement yesterday using HDMI to my Denon 6700. When checking levels I got no output on the center channel or LFE channel, in fact any channel other than L and R. Went to AudioMidi and checked levels for a 7.1 setup. Same thing, sometimes a momentary chirp out of the other channels, only L and R worked. Hmmmm... Dark thoughts of reverting to the older OS....

Played with Sound Source settings a bit, just because, no change. Then quit Soundsource. Everything back to normal and completed my REW measurements.

So SS 5.7.1 or ARK is still majorlie broken, at least for me. Anyone else seeing what I'm seeing?

And now I can't even downgrade like I have before. What a giant clusterfu*k.

I received a beta version to test out… didn’t have time to install it yet, but will report back on it. Clearly they know something is no good. From what I understood it is partly an issue either coreaudio in the latest MacOS. A next update should fix some things…

The latest version corrected the issues with my airpods dropping completely every ~second or so. But unfortunately there's still a ton of latency, making the airpods unusable. I've had to quit soundsource whenever using them. Hopefully a future update fixes this. Overall disappointed with the changeover so far - worked almost flawlessly before the switch to Ark.

I’ve been testing the beta version for the last week. It seems to be doing a lot better. So my guess is the next version will be more stable.

Beta version is working for me as well. Was sweating this as I like SS.

@voodooless, How do you get access to the Beta version?

You can ask support for it.

I've updated MacOS to the latest 15.0.1, and it's unstable again, especially when opening things like Google Meet. Had to kill Soundsource, and/or coreaudiod multiple times already.

I use Loopback to create a virtual sound output compatible with Sound Spectrum visualisers, and JRiver 33, and with Ark it no longer works in Sonoma. But I have noticed something interesting with Sound Source. I think it now uses a DAC exclusive access mode. And the sound quality has improved when I use it to listen to album samples on Bandcamp with headphones.

Yes, Loopback was integral to my playing vinyl through my system with its multi-input virtual cable. I'm still on Sonoma but ARK doesn't work properly in any of Rogue Amoeba's apps and can't go back to ACE versions for some reason. I could force it to work/reinstall but I don't want to spend my time fixing somebody else's app.

Hey there.

I have another question maybe someone can answer ? or know if it's right.
I have 2 Macbook Pro's. One Intel and now one M3 Pro and i have always been using the Intel great and the SoundSource 5.6.3 is working perfectly.
But now on the new Mac i had to use the SoundSource 5.7.x because the new Mac is running Sonoma (Didn't update to macOS 15.x yet) but with this new version every time i press the sound up/down or anything sound. The red dot in the Control Center saying " Audio Routing Kit (ARK) system audio recording ??? why is it saying it's recording sound. This is only on the ARM Mac not on the Intel.
Please can someone else check if your ARM Mac is doing the same thing. A red dot in the finder menu Control Center saying that the Audio Routing Kit (ARK is recording a sound when pressing up/down on the keyboard for example. I have the SoundSource preferences Audio "Keyboard volume control" active so the controls on the keyboard works as normal.

I have attached a video and a photo. Sorry for the language, i'm Danish so some is in Danish but i'm sure you can manage that

Thx a lot √

So every time i press the sound up/down keyboard or another sound thing. This shows in the Control Center and when it say's "Optagelse af system lyd" that means "system audio recording" , please see video from link.
