MAC OSX Sequoia + Rogue Amoeba SoundSource Issues

Hey there.

I have another question maybe someone can answer ? or know if it's right.
I have 2 Macbook Pro's. One Intel and now one M3 Pro and i have always been using the Intel great and the SoundSource 5.6.3 is working perfectly.
But now on the new Mac i had to use the SoundSource 5.7.x because the new Mac is running Sonoma (Didn't update to macOS 15.x yet) but with this new version every time i press the sound up/down or anything sound. The red dot in the Control Center saying " Audio Routing Kit (ARK) system audio recording ??? why is it saying it's recording sound. This is only on the ARM Mac not on the Intel.
Please can someone else check if your ARM Mac is doing the same thing. A red dot in the finder menu Control Center saying that the Audio Routing Kit (ARK is recording a sound when pressing up/down on the keyboard for example. I have the SoundSource preferences Audio "Keyboard volume control" active so the controls on the keyboard works as normal.

I have attached a video and a photo. Sorry for the language, i'm Danish so some is in Danish but i'm sure you can manage that

Thx a lot √

So every time i press the sound up/down keyboard or another sound thing. This shows in the Control Center and when it say's "Optagelse af system lyd" that means "system audio recording" , please see video from link.

ARK is designed as an audio capture framework, thus the privacy notification aka red dot appears in the top right corner in the control center. Anything that records audio or what's on the screen within MacOS is flagged under privacy protection by Apple.

Hey. Thx man. So this is normal on the ARM Mac's ? not doing it on my Intel Mac √ I just think it was strange it had to record on my ARM Mac and not on the Intel.
Would think it did the same on both Mac's but i guess not. Just wanted to be sure it was working right and not recording a lot of small files lying around on the Mac.

Your Intel Mac is on 5.6.3 which uses ARC, which is similar to ARK on the new ARM Mac that is on 5.7.X. Its the small change in how the audio is processed by SoundSource in Sonoma and going forward will be flagged by Apple's privacy settings.

Ah cool. Good to know. So it's totally normal i see "system audio recording" when ever i press up/down key or any other sound coming from the Mac.

Thx a lot for clarifying this

I'm happy I have found this thread.
I'm on Mac OS Sonoma and it worked great and completely flawlessly before this dreaded update with ARK

Now, dropouts with AirPods Pro, apps crashing, logic crashing, cubase crashing.
When you set an app to AirPods Pro, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.
Sometimes soundsource become unresponsive and you have to force quit it using the activity monitor.

How can you develop such a good app and out of nowhere "fix" your application with a new way to capture the audio sources without doing more beta testings?
It worked great before, so why ? We dont need that ARK.

Really considering stopping using soundsource. I honestly already stopped using It as it caused more harm to my workflow than helping it.

I wrote to the support to get a downgrade but they refused and instead asked for "logs"
Sorry I dont have the time to get logs. Fix your damn app or offer to help by just giving an older version download link...

I wanted to add to the list of bugs that seem to be associated with this app.

For a few weeks now Safari would randomly stop working, saying the webpage couldn't be loaded correctly, and then would not load any other pages. I'd have to reboot to get it to work again. I'd also randomly get white flashes of my entire screen. After enough googling, someone suggested (white flashes) it could be associated with coreaudiod. I killed that process "sudo killall coreaudiod", and immediately safari started working again. Bizarre. I can only think that Soundsource is the root here being a 3rd party app that I've relatively recently installed in the last couple months. Mainly posting here in case someone else comes across this via googling.

More problems with the latest update. Sometimes on my mac the music now show playing but the music cuts out on my Kef Wireless 2 wired to mac.

Geez. Im about done with this software.

Just received an email flyer from Ameoba stating:

MacOS 15 (Sequoia) Now Recommended

Our latest updates all offer full compatibility with Apple’s newest OS release, MacOS 15 (Sequoia). We’re pleased to note that Apple has made improvements to the OS’s underlying audio system, and that’s a boon to our apps.

Apple’s initial 15.0 release in September included several valuable bug fixes, and it was quickly followed by additional updates containing further refinements. We made particular note of the 15.1 and 15.2 updates on our blog, as each fixed specific problems our users had encountered.

At present, using the very latest version of the Mac’s operating system (currently, MacOS 15.2) provides the best experience with our products. We still provide full support back to MacOS 11, but we now recommend that all customers who can should upgrade to Sequoia.

How to kill your own software in 3 months
I'm about done too. I'm not a power user at all, but use it to eq headphones and AirPods which used to work well. Huge latency now and can't watch any kind of video without significant sync issues. Looking at alternatives.

The problem is that Rogue Amoeba's announcement makes it look like the problems were in updating to Sequoia, but they destroyed application performance in Sonoma by introducing a new system (ARK backend) and making changes that should only have happened for Sequoia OS.

anybody else have severe latency on latest soundsource? if i test the older version that doesn't give the privacy bubble, i have no latency at all. and the latency slider is all the way to the left already. looks like things broke for good, seems like they now use some laggey way to do things now? more private, sure whatever. but all video materials constantly out of sync with audio is 100% unMacey and cringe to reveal to any friend that your Mac is crippled like that whereas arch linux calmly does all the same effects on my audio with zero latencies.

I do.
And yes I have sometimes edited videos and the latency is really bad.

Do yourself a favor and give up sound source when you are doing work and serious things.

Yikes, glad I haven't updated Soundsource since I started using it... Still on 5.6.3... should I stay?

I used a lot audio hijack back in the day when I was using MultEQ via IK ARC and rePhase. I hope they can quickly fix those problems. It’s easy for me to say as I don’t rely on the app right now and only research for my next project but I assume it’s pretty hard for them to work in this kind of audio stack when every new os release brings new complications. Which are very much driven by security and privacy measures.
