Loxjie high res d40 question

I’m just getting into the world of DACs. I purchase this one abs just hooked it up. I’ve got a Sony cd player running an optical into the unit and rcas running into a McIntosh ma5100. My question. The volume control on the unit does nothing. The level control turns the volume up and down but there has to be something going on with the volume. Is this a possible user error issue or a problem with the unit. Any advise?

If you're asking about the volume buttons on the remote, they do nothing. Same as on my D30.
