for those who have tried this what spl level are the rear subs compared to the front ones? i assume you have to turn them down a little.

depends on the distance, but surely 1-2db will be necessary.

In the former room about <2 dB IIRC.
In the present room I don't know; attenuation tuning is simple, and the difference in amplitude seems not large enough to save on speakers or amplifiers.
