  1. Justifies the high price
  2. Allows precise L/R tracking accuracy
  3. Probably easier to remote-control
  4. Avoids the hassle of too-coarse steps typical of regular stepped attenuator
But some clever designers came up with an easier solution to #2 and #4 which was to design their circuits to use linear potentiometers which are lots easier to build with precise tracking than logarithmic potentiometers.
