Modern pianos use wire-wound bass strings. Without that, the strings have to be much longer. A curious 15 year old, Adrian Mann in New Zealand explored the idea by stretching single piano wire in his back yard and testing the sound. By age 20 he completed his first Alexander Piano named after his great-great grandfather. It is 18 feet long and weighs 1000kg.
