Daphile is custom Linux distribution with LMS at its core.

Daphile might be an option, although I'm a little leery about not being able to ssh into the NUC, or 'peek under the covers' of the source. I fired it up in a VM, but wasn't able to connect to the web UI -- likely my own misunderstanding of how to configure NAT in Virtualbox.

I should have been clearer in my first reply to you.

While I'm sure you've guessed by now, in the context that you're dealing with, nothing else out there that supports streaming to Squeezebox players.

There are a number of virtual Squeezebox players (ex. MoOde's renderer) available for various operating systems, though.

Yep, that was my original inclination. However, since Roon built in support for SlimProto, I thought there *might be other projects out there that did as well -- either open source or for-profit.

It's a shame there aren't more commercial projects that support Squeeze devices. The fact that LMS is still maintained is a testament to the hardware quality.

Daphile might be an option...
I don't think Daphile offers tag management, though. It does have native DSD playback which stock LMS does not.

Some members of LMS community have been pushing WiiM to incorporate Squeezebox support into its devices, but it hasn't happened yet. Still would need to use LMS as server.

BTW, a nice feature of Material Skin is "virtual libraries":

However, since Roon built in support for SlimProto...

I wasn't aware that had happened, and it looks like it occurred 2 years ago. However, I'm not really surprised that it was added; Squeezboxes are very popular still with audiophiles.

Given the size of that potential market I'm certain Roon would want to exploit it. With Squeezboxes, in various incarnations, ~11 year sales history, I suspect millions of them are still out there.

SSH and root password is enabled in the beta versions of Daphile:

@Mostmax beat me to it about the beta version. Built using Gentoo IIRC. It doesn't do anything with LMS or squeezelite that you can't do yourself, but it does bundle up a load of functionality in a nice appliance that doesn't require much specialist knowledge. It would be nice if it had automatic shutdown on idle though - I think there used to be a plugin for that but it fell out of maintenance.

Agreed, that's why I'm so surprised that Roon is apparently the only commercial entity to "pick up the torch," so to speak, and support these legacy devices.

I stumbled across another project on github. Looks like it has two flavors: either standalone or integrated with home-assistant.io. It's called Music Assistant [github repos]. It supports Slimproto, but I'm not sure yet about its tagging functionality or ability to scale up to my library size.

Any Squeeze device owners out there who have played around with this.. please share your experience with Music Assistant. Thanks
