Very interesting.

Idea is to use an array of pingpong balls touching each other on a plexiglass surface with drilled holes to create a Helmholtz resonator. By varying the hole diameter and number of holes, as well as the contact area with the plexiglass, you can shift the resonant frequencies.

Since the materials are lossy, the absorption is broader Q than expected.

Main issues for the DIYer would be inconsistent absorption across the spectrum and lots of trial and error.

This is very similar to other metamaterial arrays that are being developed. Can't wait for something commercially viable to appear.
