Same idea as acoustic metamaterials used in the KEF speakers.

Lenses traditionally had to take certain concave or convex shapes based on the properties of the material used (glass, crystal). Difference here is that with metamaterials you can define the properties you want at a atomic/molecular level to influence the final shape and function of the lens.
