A team of researchers from the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) and Oxford University has found that some black holes produce distinctive sounds when they merge, regardless of their origin.

"The chirping sound that two black holes make when they merge can be heard using gravitational-wave detectors"

It would be nice if a science writer knew some basic science. Black holes dont make sound that would take an atmosphere. Its the gravity wave detector that makes a sound.
Like saying radiation makes clicking sounds. No its the detector.

This explains a new way grav wave detector using pulsars. Don't know if it chirps.
