Given that most of the music I listen to was written by dead guys and most of my favourite performances of that music are by dead people this one is difficult but for five performers I will go with:
George Szell
Emil Gilels
Istvan Kertesz
Karl Bohm
Colin Davis
John Peel. If it wasn't for John Peel our record collections would be much smaller and much less interesting ...
Also sorely missed:
Don van Vliet
Scott Walker
Bert Jansch
Curtis Mayfield
Ari Up
Leonard Cohen
Pete Shelley
Jaki Liebezeit
Mark E. Smith
Grant Green
Ali Farka Touré
Gabi Delgado-López
Jake Thakray
Daevid Allen
Poly Styrene
Lou Reed
Karen Dalton
David Bowie
Baden Powell
Sandy Denny
Tony Allen
Given the impact he had on rock during his short performing career, one can imagine rock might be quite different today had he lived another 20-30 years.
musically,
Jon Lord, Cozy Powell, Jimi Hendrix, John Entwistle, Ronnie James Dio
Keith Emerson, John Bonham, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chris Squire, Brad Delp
Jaco Paturious, Glen Frey, Jeff Golub, Chuck Loeb, George Harrison, Ronnie Montrose etc…
Sandy Denny - she still had more to offer.
Gene Clark maybe.
The bands Matthews Southern Comfort (broke up too soon) and perhaps Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band. Matthews is still active but Rick departed in 1985 but at that point his music did nothing for me..
Some pedal steel players - Gordon Huntley, Red Rhodes, Tom Brumley.
Finally Sandy's husband Trevor Lucas. I loved his voice:
I miss most all the great musicians who left us away too early when they were still young and at the top of their carrier.
Frank Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Marvin Gaye, among them.
