Roy Orbison and Friends - A Black and White Night Live 1989
A really beautiful sounding recording, specially considering it was recorded live for a TV special
at the Coconut Grove nightclub in Los Angles 9-30-1987. Early release CD is a very dynamic sounding DR14. Containing many of Roy's biggest hits and performed with a number of guest stars it's a must have album or video. Sadly this performance was filmed just a little over a year before his unexpected death at 52 from a heart attack. Sadder even was that he was just enjoying a big comeback and was in the middle of a world tour, too much stress I imagine. :(
RIP Roy, too soon.

Thought it might be nice to get a 5.1 mix so I took a look on ebay. Dang video's taken on a cult status. Cheapest used one up there is $40, guess I'll just have to keep my eyes open for a auction that I can steal.

I bought it a long time ago and was about $20 or less. ...Many DVDs that I liked I replaced them with Blu-rays, and that one was no exception.
And the Blu kept its stereo PCM audio too. It's not the best in picture, but I noticed the difference between 480p and 1080i.
And yes, the DTS-HD Master Audio in 5.1 (lossless) is fun.

One of the great live musical performances by a guy I love very much and with the best of musician friends. ...High class from tight arrangements gelling perfectly together. One of the very best, period none equaled of that type. And I love black and white.

Ron, you started this thread about some of our favorite live albums; are Blu-rays and DVDs good to go too?
I guess so because I saw the 2-disc DVD set of this earlier:

- I have both versions; the 2-disc CD set ↑ above has a red pulsating light on the side activated by two double AA batteries (it can last couple years).
The 2 CDs are also QSound encoded.
- And the two-disc DVD set is a nice package too; but the video quality is not the best...it's quite dark and the hues of reds and blues are spilling all over.
But the live show is still impressive in its own right.

Amir, did you ever listen to that Benny Green Testifyin' live CD?
I have indeed. It is a lovely romantic Jazz recording with reference quality sound! I have saved some of the tracks in my Audiophile and Jazz playlists :). Belated thank you for the recommendation!

I read quite some time back where David Gilmour was apologetic over the video quality, that the recording was done with a low res digital system of the day and that was the best they could make of it.
The show I attended in Chicago 1994 was INCREDIBLE!

Yes, the picture quality ain't there on the DVD of Pulse.
Not many live music concerts on DVD and Blu-ray have the perfect light and colors, etc.
It's totally different than a movie, with the main accent on the music, and mainly happening @ night.

But! I have many DVDs and Blu-rays of live music concerts, and few of them are pretty good picture quality wise;
one of the latest is from Roger Waters - 'The Wall' which I just posted one of the Blu-ray versions front cover above.

* I'll post some more eventually from my Blu/DVD music collection, in 3D and in 2D.

David Gilmours - Remember That Night Blu-ray with Richard Wright and friends is the perfect alternative with much higher quality video.

Indeed. I bought it recently after recommendations on WBF and it is so lovely.

I have a high Rez vinyl rip of that. Anyone want to compare with the CD?
