Well, there was a time, way back in the 70s before airline deregulation and cut throat pricing where the airlines tried to woo their customers by offering perks instead of charging for stale sandwiches. Here is a picture of a lounge aboard an American Airlines 747 that was located in Coach! They had even nicer amenities up front!
