    Kali Audio SM-5 (C) monitor

They were a mixture. I can't remember for sure, but I think the one which died after a year & crackling were V1. DOA was a V2 I think. But for sure I've not had any issue with V2 IN8s so far.

Might have been a V1. And I'm not sure it was standby mode. But it would mute. Then if you played audio it would pop back to life a second or two later.

    Kali Audio SM-5 (C) monitor

I might have just been unlucky. I've posted this elsewhere before, so without wanting to become boring: On the IN8 specifically, I had one which was DOA, one which seemed to drop to standby even with audio at good level, and one that has the "buzzing" wiring behind the plastic front panel. But...

    Kali Audio SM-5 (C) monitor

That's a fair point. Although I do "trust" Kali to design good products. They vaguely claim higher SPL and/or lower distortion. Not really relevant, but my only issue with them has been reliability and build quality. The former of which might stop me from buying these more than the current lack...

    Kali Audio SM-5 (C) monitor

OK you win the ASR points for this one; obviously I can't cite any references. But, do you seriously have reason to suspect I'll be proved wrong if/when we do get measurements..?

Maybe they're hoping to sell into Dolby Atmos rooms, which are nearly always bass managed but can need high SPL. I'd also assume that in practice the "8" has more capability in the [roughly] 60 - 200Hz range than the "5". And definitely more than the IN series. And this is, of course, where you...

    Recommended Pro Studio Monitors?

Yeah I don't necessarily mean full range correction. And when I say cheap, I mean something like a Kali IN8. Possibly a JBL 30x, just about.

    Recommended Pro Studio Monitors?

Hmm, rightly or wrongly, that wasn't exactly what I took away from their post. OP is hiring an acoustician to do room treatment, has a budget of $9000 for monitors, and is wanting them for pro use, so some form of upgrade from Shapes does seem reasonable enough to me. It'll be a contributing...

USB Mic Preamp with Clip protection that also resets back to normal

Ah cool. My mistake. Well, in that case, if it's in budget, sorry to keep banging the drum, but the Rubix44 may well do what you need in one box at a not extortionate price compared to a 2i2. The compressor/limiter only has a few settings on the back (softer, harder, brick wall-ish) and a...

USB Mic Preamp with Clip protection that also resets back to normal

I'm a pro tools guy so I'd use protools intro for this. But it might not be the best option because routing between a physical interface (mic in) and then out to a software loop back (output to the stream) and monitoring simultaneously (headphones, on 2i2?) can be clunky on the free version...

USB Mic Preamp with Clip protection that also resets back to normal

In that case, I stand by my Rubix44 suggestion. It's not what you can achieve in post, nor what an outboard compressor or higher end mic-pre with dynamics processing can do, but at this price point and for basic podcast use, I'm confident it'd be fine. There's no HPF though, which is a shame...

    Recommended Pro Studio Monitors?

Oh I see, that's very fair. Perhaps my comment about things being worsened today is not so. Although, while I appreciate the intent, I would just lightly contend that iPad is an extreme example as they are absolutely SOTA for tablets or even laptop class devices, most phones (even iPhone 16...

    Recommended Pro Studio Monitors?

Yes, absolutely. And of course I've looked at various phone FR plots over the years. Sorry, I can't tell if you're showing us that graph to disagree with something I said, though? Or just as a casual point of interest?

    Recommended Pro Studio Monitors?

Maybe my 1980s base spec car speaker analogy is unfair. These devices do sound very good, for drivers usually less than 1" diameter (less in a phone) and in basically no height at all. It just doesn't come as surprise because it's evolved over decades. But they're still probably the things we...

    Recommended Pro Studio Monitors?

Does anyone else here use the old trick of band limit their monitoring sometimes? Or use NS10s..? Ha. I don't think it's about compromising a mix for phone speakers, but I definitely think remembering the old "get the mids right and the rest of the mix will fall into place" thing is crucial...
