The basement would be my choice, solid walls preferably. You can then fairly easily build a room with a room with all the necessary acoustic properties fairly easily and without disruption to your everyday life:D

Suspended rooms sound like suspended turntables and I've never liked Linn. :)

Isn't the better answer to get the underground room and connect all the equipment racks to the underlying bedrock (okay, not that far) or at least the concrete slab floor?

Kind of like @fas42 BluTak on steroids.

Well then, if you don't make a rack out of poured reinforced concrete with concrete speaker stands to match I will be very disappointed :D

Whats the best martial to 'clad' the walls with though? There must be a ideal surface.. or just the bare pre Sheetrock stone? Maybe with a few wooden diffusers..

You could get amir round but then he will know where you live, he will be wanting to take you on road trips to obscenely hot places in his camper van, turning up beeping the horn at all kinds of times day and night.. dressed with a look of childlike glee and expectation. probably not worth the risk vs the reward :D

I thought rockwool was standard for acoustic dampening.

I'd RTA the rooms when you have narrowed down your search, find out what your dealing with before you buy it and then look at what needs doing.

Doing this you might stumble on a room that's close to 'ideal' with little extra 'work' needing doing..

She's also a CPA, which also makes her a super tightwad.

Of course, there are downsides to that when it comes to this hobby...
Always a good spin is to talk about all the money you're saving by not hanging out in bars with the boys. :p
