Wouldn't speaker placement depend a lot on the room size, dimensions and cu ft?

I know that with many conventional speakers the bass is pretty lumpy in this room and I don't know enough about acoustics to know the 3 different floor standing pair that used side firing woofers the bass was much smoother at the listening position
