I have two of these, and I can pretty much confirm that the level of transparency with this little dongle is phenomenal. Science is great!

You might have received a bad sample. I got the XtremePro in the US and found it to work really nicely with my variety of Sennheisers and Beyerdynamics (and even a Kannon, which is a ATH-M50 clone with a "haptic" actuator, loaned to me from the company). I also tried it with an OTG USB cable...

Because it's a 76% increase in price? This is a great data point to show another obvious (that most people don't realize), that a brand doesn't mean much in terms of performance. SMSL can make stunning equipment, but just because it's an SMSL, it doesn't mean it is going to have great...

And people are flocking back to analog.... In my other life as a photographer, it also doesn't make sense. But I guess nostalgia is an emotional response and that's much stronger than facts and data.
