I don't understand your problem... (it could be my bad English) but you can use the iPad to remotely control the system.
For my solution, I usually use Ipeng which is for IOS.

For volume control....
In my view, this is one of the great differences of this DAC.
It allows digital control from a potentiometer (optional) and I was then able to remove my preamp from the system.
In my case, simplifying everything, with a real gain in the final result.
