I don't understand your problem... (it could be my bad English) but you can use the iPad to remotely control the system. For my solution, I usually use Ipeng which is for IOS. http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ Or if you prefer, the beautiful "Material Skin" that is native and free to MLS servers.

For volume control.... In my view, this is one of the great differences of this DAC. It allows digital control from a potentiometer (optional) and I was then able to remove my preamp from the system. In my case, simplifying everything, with a real gain in the final result.
