Seems like VW may not have been alone: https://www.engadget.com/2017/05/23/us-sues-fiat-chrysler-over-emissions-cheating/

US sues Fiat Chrysler over diesel emissions cheating
It supposedly used software to mislead regulators.

[...] the US Department of Justice has sued Fiat Chrysler for allegedly using a combination of defeat devices and software to trick regulators into thinking its 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engines are... well, eco-friendly. Reportedly, 2014-2016 model year Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles (104,000 in total) violated the Clean Air Act by meeting emissions rules in EPA testing, but spewing "much higher" nitrogen oxide levels in certain everyday driving situations.

The case would force Fiat Chrysler to fix the affected vehicles and demand other penalties, possibly including a fine. The EPA previously warned that a fine could climb as high as $4.6 billion. That pales in comparison to VW's $14.7 billion settlement, but it's not exactly a trivial amount.

[...]

There could be more trouble coming, if not necessarily in the US. At the same time as the Justice Department was filing its lawsuit, German officials were searching Daimler offices as part of an investigation into diesel fraud. If they find evidence of wrongdoing, that could indicate an industry-wide attempt to play fast and loose with diesel emissions, not just one or two outliers.

The high level of sulphur in diesel in the US (compared to other developed countries) significantly impairs the NOx control measures in the engines.

1,000+ diesel horsepower with torque to match makes the ground shake like a small quake. Steve may make that San Andre's fault crack yet.

Amazing new development: Mercedes to stop importing diesel cars into US for 2017: http://www.motortrend.com/news/mercedes-benz-drops-diesels-for-2017/

Is currently not seeking approval to sell diesel vehicles in the U.S.

Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, has dropped plans to seek U.S. approval for selling 2017 diesel models but has yet to decide if it will exit the American passenger diesel market altogether. Mercedes-Benz offered four Bluetec diesel models in the U.S. last year, accounting for less than 1 percent of U.S. sales for the German automaker.

“We constantly review our portfolio offerings and make adjustments to meet immediate customer need. Combined with the increased effort to certify diesel engines in the U.S., we have put the certification process for diesel passenger cars on hold,” Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman Rob Moran stated in an email.

In October, the company said that it planned to seek approval to sell passenger diesel vehicles for the 2017 model year. Daimler was approved last month to sell diesel Sprinter commercial vans after long talks with U.S. regulators.

Currently, the California Air Resources Board, the EPA, and the U.S. Justice Department are investigating Mercedes-Benz diesel models in the U.S. In Germany last month, a Stuttgart prosecutor started investigating Daimler employees for suspicion of fraud and misleading advertising related to diesel vehicles.

Dietmar Exler, president and chief executive of Mercedes-Benz USA, told reporters in April that the German automaker had not made a decision on the future of U.S. diesel sales and could seek 2017 certification later. Additionally, Exler mentioned that Mercedes-Benz is “leaving the door open to offer diesels as a potential option in our passenger cars and SUVs.”

Due to growing scrutiny of diesel vehicles in the U.S. and after witnessing the fallout over Volkswagen’s diesel emissions scandal that could cost the automaker up to $25 billion in the U.S. alone, Daimler is probably fearful of the possible repercussions it could face if found guilty. After being accused of illegally using software to pass diesel emissions tests, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles hasn’t received approval to sell 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 diesel models.

So we continue to commit global financial suicide, shooting our own industries in the head over some inconsequential amount of pollutants. While the Chinese and other Asian countries run around wearing masks but laughing at us while kicking our as-ses in the manufacturing.
