Youtube is running ads against my channel :(

Fortunately AdGuard AdBlocker works great blocking all adds on the computer. It also doesn't seem to slow down my computer at all. Unfortunately i still get a few adds ( not many ) when using the Amazon 4k firestick.

Here is the puzzling thing: the only time I saw ads were when I was using the Edge browser. On my devices I still don't see ads even though I don't have an ad-blocker. Anyone is seeing ads that don't have ad blockers?

youtube tries to space out the ads so you dont get tired of them and leave or install ad block.

I watched your latest video today by using the Android official app and I have not seen any ads...

On my phone I use NewPipe (https://newpipe.net/) a lot.

I would do it in the verbal introduction, but in a friendly way. "Hey, folks, just realize that YouTube will add advertising to this video. I don't control it at all." And then go on as if it's not worth dwelling on. I don't think that will sound defensive, but it will make the point.

A banner below the screen could show that text...

I had no idea. My channel can monetise but we've deliberately chosen not to monetise our videos. If they still show ads I guess we just have to turn it on??

I've disabled pihole, then opened an incognito Chrome window (with no ad blockers), and haven't seen a single advertisement on your channel (either in the form of video ads at the start of the video, or a banner text ad overlaid on top of the video, or when skipping to different timelines in the video that trigger video ads). I tested about 10 random videos from the channel.

Just to confirm that it wasn't a fluke, I looked at other youtube channels, and I got flooded with ads.
Then, I repeated the experiment with an incognito Firefox, and same thing...no ads for your channel, but ads for all other channels.
Then, I repeated the experiment with an incognito Edge, and same thing...no ads for your channel, but ads for all other channels.
Then, I repeated the experiment with my iPhone, I simply enabled incognito mode for Youtube app, and same thing...no ads for your channel, but ads for all other channels.

So...everything looks normal.

Twitch is the future...

Here is a conspiracy theory then. :)

On the Edge browser I used, I am logged in and is how I manage my channel. I wonder if Google knew that and decided to throw ads at me either as a threat, or reminder that I should advertise?

I'd suggest calling this out in a sticky post and moving on. If readers follow ASR properly, it will be obvious to them that you are not trying to monetize anything. Impossible to keep the whole world happy.

@amirm select "opt-in" for ads and collect the $20 or $50 payout every time your account reaches that increment. For every million hits that should equal about $1000 give or take some. According to calculations that I did a few years ago.

I either watch on the Android YT app or the Google TV YT app. So far I haven't seen any ads.
On proper computers I have uBlock Origin.

on Windows I use Slimjet browser that has a built in ad blocker....... have not seen an ad in years since. On Android I use NewPipe....... can subscribe to channels without ever logging in... and no ads.

I was browsing my youtube channel tonight and was surprised to see Youtube running ads against my videos even though I had not enabled monetization. I searched and I see that they changed their policy last year and will run ads against your content whether you like it or not. And of course they keep all the revenue.

At some level this is fine since they are providing a service for free. What I don't like is that I have no control over it, nor did I see any notification, stats, etc. In the page for monetization it clearly says I have not yet set up for such. Yet here we are.

Not wanting them to pocket all the money, I went ahead and applied for the program. Wish I could leave it unmonetized but there seems to be no way to do that. Sorry about that you all. Of course feel free to use ad-blockers.

Yeah, typical Youtube garbage policy changes tightening the stranglehold as does any corporation the moment it notices their marketshare nearing monopoly status.

This happened recently, and the backlash was pretty intense, but they didn't care. No need to announce it to anyone as to why you have ads, everyone knows it's non optional anymore.

idk theres plenty of things to criticize google for but im not sure this is one of them. they need to make money somehow and youtube overall is losing them money

I've used AdBlockPlus for years and it just works. No YouTube ads but ~occasionally once a month or so a web site ad gets past the blocker.

Doodski, that is the perfect example of why I stopped using the plus version and went back to the standard AdGuard AdBlocker version.

Amir, I use the the Edge browser also, combined with the Adguard AdBlocker I have never received an ad on any website, including Youtube.
