If you're like me and wondered why listening via YouTube app seems low in volume compared to other apps, it's true. Leaving this here for future reference.
TL;DR: app output is -6dB by standard
Procedure: 50Hz test signal, software and DAC volume set to maximum, DAC output (DO100) measured with generic multimeter. Test signal:
Test 1: playback via YouTube directly.
Test 2: download via generic web downloader (notube.cc) that doesn't do any normalising or such, just plain conversion. Then played with UAAP audio player.
Result:
1.456V is exactly what you'd expect from a signal with -3dB from ~2.1V nominal output. 0.711V is ~ -6dB from that. Tests done with USB connection, and repeated via Bluetooth. Identical results.
I don't know why YouTube app does this, there's no setting either. Either way, it's annoying and unpractical. No idea whether it does the same on PC in the browser or whatever, or on other systems. Can't test here, perhaps someone can confirm.
So if you're noticing the same and start to wonder whether there's something wrong with your DAC/interface or volume settings, make sure it's not just uToob being silly.
