Your latest cool purchase

I have exactly the opposite response to the rough & tumble idle of my Crosstrek (FWIW). It kind of reminds me of the famous/infamous Beetle engine's sound, but not really. To me, the Soobie just sounds rough.
YMMV, though, of course.

Unfortunately, owing a Subaru has done nothing but make me wonder why I ever bought one - and I bought it with aforethought, too! :(
That sounds like a bad experience. I read ever Subaru manufactured is sold very quickly and the customer service is great. The sound is not for everybody for sure...LoL. :D

I love how those Subaru make the chugging sound with the cylinder firing order... It sounds very different and unique.
that's from the unequal length exhaust headers on the older turbo models- the turbo is off to one side so one bank of cylinders have longer exhaust headers than the other bank, and the difference in the amount of time it takes for each exhaust pulse to travel through the pipes gives you the exhaust sound.

Far out. I thought it was a piston firing order thingy. :D

Just put in an order for a handstitched leather satchel by a French craftsman I've been admiring for some time, and realised there wasn't a catch-all thread for cool purchases.

It will be in thick vegetable-tanned hazelnut-coloured leather from a small French tannery, with fasteners made in Germany and cast brass buckles made in France.

It will have 2 adjustable fasteners like this signature design of his

But in the size of a messenger bag (with removable pen and phone pockets):

And it will be gorgeous. That's all I wanted to share.
My dad had an "European carry case" aka man-purse in the 90's. It was badass, I always wanted one, then it got out of fashion.

They're great engines till you have to split the crankcase for a rebuild.........I don't think i've ever swore so much in my life

I have worked extensively with outdoor equipment engines, motorcycle, snowmobile, cars and trucks... i have swore a lot.. gg* :D

No turbo on mine.
Given its paucity of power, I am not sure it actually has any piston rings. ;)
Doesn't burn oil, though.
Interestingly, turned up 50k miles this week -- in a bit less than 5-1/2 years of ownership (2019 bought new in Dec. 2018).
Blandest car I've ever owned, even with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The much-ballyhooed AWD performance is underwhelming, too. When we want a no-drama drive in bad weather, we take Mrs. H's CR-V. Much better in the snow than the Crosstrek.
I did, last year, move to Michelin CrossClimate II tires, which are, at least, not frightening when driving in slushy conditions.

I have been really disappointed by this car.

Interesting... What would you replace her with? Maybe a Mazda Miata... That's exciting! :D

current subarus suuuuuuuuuuuck, i would not buy anything they make now. current crosstrek compared to a 2004 STI is like comparing a toyota yaris to a mid-90's 2JZ-powered Supra :)

I can't imagine ever buying another one.
I will say, it's comfortable enough and quiet enough. It hasn't been unreliable, but the radio stopped remembering presets last year, and I've had a windshield washer nozzle that's been "fixed" twice by the dealer but still barely squirts. Fit and finish is fair, but Toyota and Honda are still miles ahead -- kilometers, even, for "everyday, everybody" vehicles.

@Doodski I really don't know. I like small outside, big inside, fun and snappy to drive, reliable, and cheap.
I loved my 2011 Fiesta, but it was useless 4 to 5 months out of the year where we live now. The Soobie has decent ground clearance.
I wish Honda still made the Fit. Our son has a 2013; it's a ball to drive.
I imagine that if a 1969 Chevy Impala with a six-cylinder had a manual transmission and FWD (or AWD), it would feel a lot like the Crosstrek does to drive. ;)

I‘m to some extent moving away from purchasing things and instead focusing on experiences. I’ve purchased a rental of a race prepped E46 M3 and a track day at Spa at the end of April.

Bunch of books, magazines, and a couple of videos, mostly unavailable through my extended library system. Surprisingly, Future Shock is one of those. Way behind on my reading though. Have previously read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and was happy to add a copy to my collection for a couple of bucks.

I love my Suby's (have 3 in driveway) and think the Crosstrek looks great. Not much of a winter here in N MI but a couple friends with a Crosstrek say they handle great in snow - up here we have summer and winter tires though. No car is any good in real snow with all seasons.

I have a 2014 forester next to the STI in the garage, @DWPress
still mad they stopped making the XT foresters in '18 . . .but suby's made it clear they no longer are interested in making fast cars/SUVs. we'll see how the forester hybrid looks when it comes out in a couple of years- I'm thinking my FXT will either be replaced with one of those or maybe a Rivian R2 if Rivian survives!

I bought a tiny device that allows Apple Car Play to work wirelessly in my car. Well worth $70, and it took less than a minute to set up.

I felt that way about the original Accord. Odd to think now. Those were small, back then about the size of a Fit now. Unreasonably good for such a reasonable car. Fun to drive, efficient, inexpensive, simple reliable, and all with only 72 hp.

Huh? I've driven such an Impala with RWD of course. A car that is large on the inside and large on the outside and feels like it. I've driven a Crosstrek. So no, have you been partaking of mind altering drugs?
