you have been in a coma for 2 years, which movie should you watch?

It is a restricted-level film and has been banned in many countries.
I don't think it was actually banned in any Country? I know many theater goers walked out though and the film was heavily criticised.

That’s an interesting take. While you appear to imply otherwise, the film was a commercial and critical success by any rational measure, per Wikipedia:

Oppenheimer grossed over $976 million worldwide, becoming the third-highest-grossing film of 2023, the highest-grossing World War II-related film, the highest-grossing biographical film and the second-highest-grossing R-rated film.

Oppenheimer received critical acclaim, with almost unanimous praise towards its historical accuracy, cinematography, musical score, Nolan's direction and screenplay, and the performances of its ensemble cast, particularly those of Murphy, Downey, and Blunt. The recipient of many accolades, Oppenheimer won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Murphy and Best Supporting Actor for Downey. It also won five Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Drama) and seven British Academy Film Awards (including Best Film), and was named one of the top ten films of 2023 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute.

That doesn’t mean everybody liked it of course, hardly heart-warming family fare, and Nolan’s style can polarise. It’s also a controversial subject. And while the film flew by for me in the cinema, it was actually three hours. You are correct though, In Japan release was delayed, but as a result of distributor choice rather than official censorship, again per Wikipedia:

The film was not released in Japan until eight months after its initial global release. Variety noted the controversial reputation in Japan due to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A Universal spokesperson said that "plans have not been finalized in all markets". American films are often released in Japan a few months after the initial theatrical release. In December 2023, the independent Japanese film distributor Bitters End announced that it would theatrically release the film in 2024, as Universal's distributor in Japan Toho-Towa opted not to release it. The film was later released by Bitters End in Japan on March 29, and during its first three days, it was ranked as the country's highest grossing foreign film after making 379.3 million yen ($2.5 million) at the box office.

An August release concurrent with US/UK screening would land it in the Hiroshima/Nagasaki memorial period, so the delay makes sense. There’s a longer discussion of Japanese reactions there also. While controversial, probably incorrect to say it wasn’t well attended.

I was actually referring to Joker 2019, as per @jayapple's post, who was replying to @Tell. ;)

Oh crap, sorry about that. I misread the post you quoted and went straight on from their (and your previous) mention of Oppenheimer. Probably better watch Joker and see what I think of it. Reading about it now is certainly interesting, but I’ve never been much interested in Todd Phillips’ stuff.

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned Todd Field‘s 2023 film Tár yet? Dramatic, even intense, but not slow, really great lead by Cate Blanchett. The musical performances are also nicely done.

One of the few movies that I stopped watching because it was so dull (and I generally like slow movies) :)

A recent movie that's not dull is RRR, damn it was a good ride! You just need a while to get used to the fact that it is a Bollywood movie which really is something else that westerners is not used to. The closest to a western movie (as in the west, not the genre) would be something like Demolition Man.

In fact, in recent years, only the movie Joker has left a deep impression on me.

Oppenheimer is a fairly good movie from the past two years, but it's like a documentary.
I saw Oppenheimer in IMax. Nolan has gotten almost silly with sound In all his movies since Intersteller. If you have a heart condition I’d highly advise watching this one at home. Fortunately I’m in good health, but there are parts that you feel bass to the point of uncomfortable to my listening levels. i was not interested enough to fact check the movie but it did play out a bit like a documentary.

Back into sound discussions… was expected :)

I personally agree, bass energy of Oppenheimer can potentially cause more damage than the bomb itself.

But is not only a Nolan’s preference, the tendency is to put seismometers at 8 of Richter’s scale in every action movie

Just in case the OP and others missed this thread, I doubt many here have

I didn’t see Tár in the cinema, not being so much into orchestral music and not expecting to really like it, rather saw it with my siblings at home. It's rare we all like the same film equally but this was an exception, one of the best releases last year we reckoned. We were having a bit of a marathon, having just watched Aphichatphong Wirasetthakun’s Memoria (which I’d totally recommended to fans of slow/strange/transcendental drama, but probably not to the OP) so obviously in the mood for a light/frothy dessert. :)
