Yamaha HS8 - measurements anyone?

Hi all,

I am having a hard time finding measurements of the Yamaha HS8. Online there are only a few sketchy FR curves that look much better than its smaller brothers, but nothing showing distortion or dispersion. I saw that the HS5 and HS7 were tested here, but I wanted to check if the HS8 does better.

To those who own it - I would appreciate if you could share a REW distortion plot at 86db - 1m.

Thanks...weird distortion measurements. Did they measure the speaker at 2m distance in free field at 85 and 97db? so the red line is teg speaker at 1m and 88db? Am I reading this correctly? if yes, this is not very helpful, it is a pretty loud level

These are multitone distortion measurments. Levels were set by taking an average of the signal at 2m with A-weighing. The signal has a crest factor of 12dB. In a free field, sound is subject to a 6dB increase by halving the distance.

too hard for me, but thanks. What do you think of this performance in terms of distortion, compared to the traditional measurements that Amir does at 86 and 96db?

It's measuring a different thing. Amir is measuring harmonic distortion; this is intermodulation distortion.

Amir's H5 review was close to the beginning of him using the Klippel NFS, so the measurements there don't match his standard set now.

The HS7 review shows the standard set., only in % rather than dB The only issue is around 1.5kHz. Not sure what's causing it, but that spike shows a mechanical problem with the speaker. It's not significant given how low the level is. Distortion rarely is an audible problem other than when trying to drive a small speaker too hard. You can assume the HS8 measurements to be more or less same, other than being slightly lower in the bass range because of the bigger woofer.

The most important measurements are to do with frequency response. Are you comfortable with interpreting those?

Also, I extracted and compared the S&R's MTD measurements with Erin's below. Different speakers, different signals and measurement setups, so this comparison is only marginally useful. Anyway, here is it, smoothed to 1/3 octave.

I am, yes. I wonder why Amir does not test compression, I feel that it is an important attribute too

That's not a useful distinction. HD and IMD come from the same speaker and the same transfer function. What S&R published is not based on a two or three tone IMD test. This is a dense signal with 60 tightly spaced tones simulating music. The result will include all nonlinearities the speaker generates. There aren't clear thresholds we can use to judge.
 
The measurements were taken about 1m from the speakers. The room is almost square 405/395/250cm, acoustically well treated with bass traps, acoustic panels, cloud, diffusers, etc. The microphone is a Behringer ECM8000 with an averaged calibration file from Cross-Spectrum Labs. The graphs are not smoothed, no EQ correction has been applied. Around 60Hz I have strong cancellation, at 90Hz I also have a little cancellation, the dips around 1kHz and the peak around 1.5kHz are due to the desk, the measurements are around 80dB. The measurements are from one measurement, only from the listening position, after I took 7 measurements from the front, left, right, etc., the averaged graph looks much more decent. After adding a budget sub ESI Aktiv 10S and applying an equalizer, the sound and graphics (averaged graph from 7 meansurments) become even better, but the sub adds additional distortion, a the last graph, the measurements are around 85dB.
