Yamaha AS701 / Wiim Ultra Streamer

Since the AS701 cannot operate like a pure pre amp , hence I wouldn’t probably need to adjust the Yamaha volume to fixed gain and adjust wiim volume gain too.

But seen other reports online regarding fixed volume gain

Model 50-Stereo 70 and Model 70 from Marantz can act like power amps.

Is this better suited idea ?

I guess I need to adjust the volume gain etc…

Is the Ultra streamer originally designed with the Ultra amp for the best sound philosophy.

No volume fixed gain volume like above .

A true power amp may be the best solution. I had the AS-701 before I purchased an Ultra. I didn’t want to have to purchase a new amp. I have been very happy with the combo. I leave the 701 volume set around 50% and use the Ultra to control overall volume. (Speakers connected to the 701 & subwoofer connected to the Ultra for bass management). Works well for me- but may not be ideal for everyone.

SVs sb1000 pro is the sub I am considering.

Yes, I can bypass Yamaha fixed 100 Hz by connecting it using speaker cables (high level .)

Apparently there’s better blend with the main speakers then .

Read the Sb1000 PRO and Wiim ultra streamer and the matching Wiim power amp is an amazing combo .

I have tried on multiple occasions to use RoomFit- but never was happy with the results. I prefer using the EQ and sub management to dial in the sound. The SVS subs are really nice, from all I’ve read.

I’ve listed to the Wiim Amp Ultra in my own listing room and kit , and I am not so keee on the Wiim sound compared to the Yamaha sound .

That’s why maybe the streamer might be better fit .

SB1000 PRO connection to the Wiim, and maybe it could rock. I haven’t tried the sub with the Ultra amp . This might solve the issue; sound wise .

Yamaha sounds tad thicker sounding then the Ultra amp. EQ etc does entirely help either . I’ll admit haven’t done proper REW measurement and one calibration file with the Umik-1.

I’ll might try the Vibelink and the matching Wiim ultra streamer . I can use my BluOs Node N132 for airplay .

AirPlay is not supper important but at moment I only use IOS devices

Btw. SVs has released new you can connect to your IOS devices.

Do you hear a definite difference by high passing the main speakers vs Yamaha low pass full range sub setup .

You can use the A-S701 as a poweramp without problems. It's only about adjusting the line-out voltage of the Ultra and volume of the Yamaha.

Subwoofer is handled by the Ultra. Delay adjustments, crossover, RoomFit is all handled by the Ultra.

It's a nice combo if you don't mind the size of the Yamaha amp. When buying new I would get something else, like a Vibelink.

I have an RSL Speedwoofer 10e- and use the Ultra bass management to adjust it. Works great for me.

I just want try the Room Fit etc . Subs later.

Not that the sound I’ve got is poor.

Plenty of snappy bass because of AS701 current !

You can control the volume on the Yamaha or on the Ultra. Or both. Or set the Ultra to fixed volume and just use the Yamaha.

Just be aware: the Yamaha has a line-in sensitivity of (afaik) 200mv. So with that value and the volume knob at 100% it can reach max. power. The Ultra has an adjustable output. Standard is 2v. That obviously doesn't match the full range of the knob of the Yamaha. Adjust it if you want the knob to be fully functional.

In the beginning ii am going to try and get used to P.E.Q settings and EQ/Room Fit.

Not that the sound per se is bad at the enough.

I know of course the the sub connection, I’ll need to adjust the volume accordingly. Only use the wim own volume dial .

Many people have reported excellent results from Roomfit, getting better DRC results manually is a huge learning curve

any other automated solutions very expensive.

The Yamaha is just a one-time set and forget, lots of power amps have volume adjustment.

In the OP you stated preamp, I assume that was an error, the Wiim is your preamp.

If you want automated Loudness Contouring, I recommend Schiit Forkbeard as your Volume level control via Mimir after Wiim

or Eitr 2 out of Wiim's USB if your amp has digital input

No, the WU Amp is an all-in-one unit. I would advise keeping to a separate power amp like you have now.

I have a Wiim Ultra directly connected to an Adcom 535II power amp…that drives Paradigm towers.

- The Ultra can adjust its zero db output to any of 2V, 1V, 500mV or 200mV…I use it to match my power amp (its full output is at 0.97V) so ultra ‘s full output = the amplifier’s full output.
- It can be set to either fixed output or variable (to directly drive a power amp).
- It could drive the power amps or any integrated amp or receiver that has separable pre-out power-in jacks.
- it has a transparent DAC…it’s sound quality is as good as it gets.
- it has a 10-band parametric equalizer built in, so you can correct the frequency response easily, and deal with many room effects somewhat.

- if I were you I would worry only about getting a good quality power amp with an Ultra driving it directly.

- you will love it.

OP's existing amp is fine to be "used as" a power amp.

No reason I can see to replace it, just add the Ultra

As mentioned I am aware that the Ultra can be used in a “conventional “ way with any modern integrated pre and power amp .

Just , have to adjust the volume gain should I connect I sub to the Wiim .

You have to define what makes it better for you.

I find the Vibelink has the best optical match. But also use a 3e audio A7 and a Purifi 1ET6525 with it.

It's more like the speakers and room define the amp for me. But on a desk I want it small and good looking.
