Yamaha A6A with Topping E70 Velvet

Hi guys,

Just bought my first AV receiver and am learning about home theater setup.

Is it possible to configure my Topping E70 Velvet to play 2 channel audio to my Yamaha A6A for my front speakers and then let Yamaha A6A handle the rest of the channels? My HDMI1 is my PC.

Right now, I can only play my Topping DAC by enabling Audio 4 (XLR) and set video output to HDMI1, and used YPAO parametric EQ flat.

Let me know if that makes sense or not. It looks like if I want to enjoy music, I fire up my DAC which sends audio to my Yamaha A6A (Audio4). But if I want to enjoy movies or videogames that support surround sound, I would switch input from Audio4 to HDMI1.

For 2 pure channel you need to setup a different speaker pattern where you only have the front speakers. The Yamaha allows two speaker patterns. So setup one for surround sound and one for just the front speakers. Don't use YPAO for the second pattern. If you use YPAO your XLR input is converted to digital, EQ, is applied, and then converted back to analog. You would be better off connecting the device directly to the Yamaha and not using the Topping to avoid converting to digital and back to analog again if using EQ.

Setup scenes as you can select which pattern is used in the scenes. Scenes are very powerful and you can have multiple scenes with the same inputs so you can set for different purposes. Set the sound mode to pure direct if you want use the Topping's DAC. That way it is not converted to digital and you hear the Topping's DAC.

When using EQ. A note on Yamaha's EQ modes.
EQ flat. This is flat at the listening position. Ths mode I wouldn't normally recommend as it will have elevated high frequencies and sound "bright". Some might think it brings out more detail the high frequencies but that will get fatguing if you listen for a while. High frequencies lose energy before low frequencies. If you are listening more than 6ft (2m) away the high frequencies will be less than what comes out of the speaker. The further you sit, the more high frequencies will be rolled off. This is natural and what we are used to. I would recommend this setting for people with high frequency hearing loss.

EQ natural. Doesn't make it flat at the listening position but still corrects for problems in the room. I would recommend for most situations.

EQ front. Makes the other speakers sound like the front left and right speakers. This can be beneficial if your left and right speakers are your best speakers and the rest of your speakers are mismatched and not from the same manufacturer or series.

EQ through. No EQ but you still want bass management to send kow frequencies to the sub and levels and delays used between speakers.

When you use pure direct, all EQ is bypassed as well as bass management, delays and levels between speakers. Pure Direct is the only sound mode you would here your Topping DACs.

I've tried hooking my Topping PA7 to the pre-outs and have YPAO enabled. It seems fine. But sort of leaning towards returning the Yamaha and trying out Mini DSP HTX. I think I would lose Dolby and DTS support. AI says something about setting up LPCM.

Correct, the HTx does not decode surround sound formats.

I would advise you to configure two separate systems.
Connect the E70 to the PA7 via XLR to drive the front speakers as a stereo setup.
Connect all other speakers to the A6A.
Connect the A6A's front-channel pre-outs to the PA7's RCA inputs.
You will need to calibrate the PA7's volume level relative to the A6A and run the setup/measurement process.
That way, you have two separate systems for stereo and AVR use.
I’ve been running my setup this way for 30 years.

Yeah, I bought A6A because it has XLR outputs and inputs. I've connected them to the XLR pre-outs and then turned on bypass on the Topping PA7 to let A6A handle the volume.
