My little mid-fi system
Mac Air→ RME ADI2 DAC FS → McIntosh C47 Preamp
├── Out 1 → McIntosh MC7270 x2 → Revel Salon2 LF
├── Out 2 → Yamaha MX-D1 → Revel Salon2 HF
└── Out 3 → miniDSP 2x4 HD (subwoofer management)
├─→ M&K MX700
├─→ M&K MX700
├─→ M&K MX700
└─→ Sunfire 10
This is a result of 100s of REW and MSO measurements and tweaks to minimize room modes as my room is challenging and Revel Salon2 are objectively relatively flat and "good" performing speakers.
IMHO, my weak link is the C47 Preamp. Maybe my amps but I don't think changing amps will make an audible difference. Anyhow, still saving up for different amps.
Looked at the Benchmark LA4 but since I need 3 outputs this wouldn't work, and, there is a significant difference in output gain between balanced and unbalanced outputs.
Only reason for passively bi-amping are
REW measurements were better than using 1 of the 3 amps. Tried all the combinations. 1 MC7270 alone. 2 X MC7270 bridged mono. 1x MXD1, etc.
Started with 1 subwoofer and then when I needed to add more subwoofers to deal with room modes, added the Minidsp.
With regards to replacing the C47, I'm looking at:
WFS STP -SE, Octave Audio HP 700SE, and maybe McIntosh C1100 and then it goes way out of my budget.
Will going from 100db sinad preamp to 120+ SINAD preamp make an objectively audible difference? Obviously if I do go to a 120db+ sinad preamp my amps will be the weak link. Upgrading subs will happen over time.
