Let's say there's a catastrophic event and your current setup gets completely destroyed but you get back 100% of what you paid from insurance.

Would you get the same setup you have now?

I was just wondering that myself and came to a conclusion that for the most part answer would be "no".

It's not that I really regret buying the stuff, but there sure is some overkill there. I think I could replace my 2.2 system with something like LS60 and save some money,. Not sure I need big Genelecs for my desktop. I have a lot of headphones when one of them is still the best and what I use most of the time etc etc

Yes.

Edit: but I need to buy current models as most of my stuff is no longer available. I'd need an AVP by another brand since Classe no longer produces AVPs, and I might replace the Genelec 8020a by Neumann KH80 but otherwise I'm quite happy with what I have.

Essentially I'd get the same setup. Well not necessarily exactly the same stuff but similar, viz. excellent DIY speaker, (probably the same ones as I've got), an ultra-low distortion, likely class D amplifier, ultra-low distortion balanced DAC, perhaps cheaper than I've got. I might look for something different in case of the preamp.

I have a tube preamp albeit one noted for its relatively low distortion; I might just go for an ultra-low distortion, maybe slightly cheaper preamp. In any case the pre would need to have remote control and be fully balanced differential.

No option for upgrade?

For me I’d buy a upgrade Genelec. Electronics I’m fine with.

Added that option. I thought that if one is needing an upgrade and have the money then they would have already have it in their current system.

But I can see that all that available money could allow going for the BIG thing. Like use everything for the main setup and get some true endgame stuff.

I might get class D for all the amps. That's about it.

Luckily I have a very good and long relation with my hifi-dealer. His portfolio is so, that I always will find a solution. His motto is: "Things I do not offer you do not need ;)"
My electronic gear stays with me for 2 years, then the dealer takes it back for a very reasonable "leasing fee" and I replace it. Sometimes with the same component, sometimes with things which suits me more. For me it is the cheapest way to have always "new" stuff.
(And so I do it with cars. Use it 2 years, sell it for a good price and avoid cost for repair/maintenance.)

I would keep my Schiit headphone amp and the separate ATOM DAC+ but I would buy better headphones. My Sennheiser HD 598SR are good but I want some Dan Clark Audio headphones. :D

I'd be really sad. Love the Paradigm Signatures, no longer made in any way shape or form, and my 30+ year old Adcom is much beloved as well. The Yamaha AVR? No worries there, I'd just get whatever is the current model.

Because of our age, my wife and I have been searching very seriously for age-restricted housing. I don't know whether we'll find something satisfactory, but if we do, I'll abandon loudspeakers totally and go with headphones only. Ten years ago, I couldn't have imagined myself saying that, but the passage of time has a way of changing my attitudes.

I live in a 55+ place now. Everybody is very friendly and relaxed. We have security guards, cleaning staff and lunches in the common area library/meeting place every month or so for people that want to partake. It's quiet and no idiots/boneheads hanging about like some places have.

Oh so important! I don't want to put up with them, and I don't want to be one of them, either.

Jim
I presently live near downtown in a major city so we have the social disorder that is common nowadays and that means lots of druggies, homeless, idiots and boneheads wandering about. If they come to the building grounds or come inside the security guard takes care of that pretty fast. They have video feeds from cameras all over the building so they can monitor the outside and the inside from a desktop computer in the security guards' office. I previously lived in the area just outside the city core for some years in a house and we had strangers coming right into the back yard and pretending they where lost when seen on the video cameras and told to leave. There where more issues there than downtown in the secure building. :D

I'd replace my OG Kef R3's with the Metas since they're better for the same price.

Everything else would stay the same.

Better, but cheaper (and newer) ADC and DAC; fewer cartridges, having sorted favorite styli.
Newer receiver with newer HDMI support; DIY PC instead of prebuilt.
Speakers are practically irreplaceable; have no idea what would sound as good.

I’d consider ditching the dedicated 2-channel system + turntable in favor of Audyssey XT32-equipped AVR, with particular attention paid to L, R and Center channel speakers. Be adventurous and try home-made Speaker->XLR line level adapters, allowing use of active monitors in these most-critical positions, with other channels using passives for cost and convenience? A tantalizing possibility.

Headphones are a weak point of my current Marantz AVR: No spatializer, no DSP, no Bluetooth output. You think it would be simply a matter of hanging a separate BT transmitter or headphone amplifier off the AVR’s line-out jacks, but on my NR-series AVR, the line-out jacks don’t work for HDMI sources

Overall, potentially a more economical setup, and a space-saver.

Knowing what I know now despite years 'in the trade,' I'd have a totally different setup. Thing is, all my current gear is old, so anything new which is carefully selected at similar prices would be better. Sadly, I can't consider pure studio gear next time, as it has to be easy for the family to use and waf on the speakers and so on is important.

In 2017 my house flooded ruining a nearly new pair of B&W towers. The property was sold for land value and we bought another house in an area far less prone to flooding. The towers were replaced with LS50's and Rythmik subs. If that happened again I would buy an RV and never be heard from again listening on headphones for the rest of my days. That is if I didn't have a total nervous breakdown.

I would get everything the same in my recording studio except the interface. It is a Presonus 1818VSL, for which Presonus dropped driver support 2 days after I bought it, putting Presonus permanently on my "Never Buy Anything From This Brand Again Sh*t List."

I'd replace it with an RME interface with 8 inputs and ADAT fiber in/out.

Some stuff I have I would not replace with the same stuff due to its age, unobtainium status, or lack of current usage:
- Fender 70s 50W Bassman amp with a 2x12 folded horn speaker cab.
- Kramer 70s aluminum-neck bass (a very heavy beastie)
- Peavey Kosmos sub-bass processor.
- My studio PC, which still works fine, but is showing its age (new build in 2009). Still plenty fast enough for audio/midi recording/ mixing/ mastering but chokes & gags on video editing. Remarkably reliable, given its age.

I got my first hifi system about 25 years ago (Yamaha Pianocraft 100). Changed a lot of components over the years, many times with only marginal improvements (if any ...). Considering the small space for my stereo setup I'm very happy with it now and wouldn't change anything. My surround setup is quite cheap (at least the speakers) and Kef LS50s for the bed layer were on my mind for some time now. But after watching a lot of different content my impression is that with excellent atmos or auro3d source material the "sound bubble" experience already is excellent ("Daylight" as Auro3D edition for example, "Midway", "Mad Max Fury Road" etc.). Unfortunately most movies don't make full use of the available technology as sound obviously is not no.1 priority.
