A new candidate with exceptional ;) value for money, $65000 for this compact loudspeaker

Very nice, sticking a couple drivers into a wood box and not doing much else it seems for $65k. Gotta love Mr. Atkinson's conclusion at the end of the measurements section:

The Audio Note AN-E/SPx Ltd. Field Coil's measured performance is somewhat idiosyncratic.
Idiosyncratic, right.

Holy diffraction dip Batman!

Also... field coil? What decade is it?
You should visit other forums. Apparently field coils are the new wave

That's JA-speak for "very obviously flawed".

I was thinking the same (Norway here), movies outside? It would either be too bright or snowing. :D
I think you just defined geographical disadvantage.

A top candidate, not to talk about frequency response, directivity, resonances but even pair matching is poor and this for "only" 24000€ for a pair of compact full band drivers:

wow that is a lot of resonances.

To the young: This is a "drive-in," c. 1956. View attachment 456941
  1. They had so-so image quality projection, if everybody would only keep their headlights off.
  2. The sound was worse. In a normal indoor theater in 1953-1956, the sound was just getting good (providing one had a magnetic/stereo soundtrack rather than the execrable mono/optical ones).
  3. Also, think of the difference between this:View attachment 456942

A well off friend of mine has had a home theatre built and the seating is a 1950s Cadillac convertible.

That speaker is their model E available with varying driver diaphragms, voice coils and magnets and crossovers with varying amounts of silver components the field coil drivers being the most expensive over a huge span.
They may well sound quite similar to each other but the placebo effect gets stronger the more expensive they get.
Probably.

ah yes of course. Mediocrity wrapped in marketing drivel
