World Cup 2026 Thread

This was different though.
It's only different because of your politics. That's the point. And focusing on that in 2026 is quaint outrage.

Fuck me, that was some shit refereeing. Should have been 3-0 to Egypt.

That goal would have meant 2-0 at that point of the match for Egypt, but as we can't possibly know how the scenario after that would have played out if that goal had been approved, we don't know if Egypt would have ever scored that third goal (the legal 2-0 goal). ;)

I am genuinely sad that you feel confused. A head of state using their influence on a sporting event. You think that's ok because everything worked out ok... Jesus wept
We will never know what actually happened behind the scenes, it might not be what you think but you will never know and either will I, all we know is the results. Compared to having the US lose without their star player on a controversial red card where every US fan feels cheated what happened is a much better result. Take a step back from the personalities you don't like and it is not so bad.

a controversial red card
Sorry but it was only controversial in the US. The average european has watched 1000+ games and played 100+, and nobody I know would tell you it's not an obvious red card.
You got to have a strange relationship with reality to say this isn't a red card

Aren't you being very US-centric now though? It looks like you're saying that it's better for the football world that the US got to play with that player because of what looks like clear corruption because Americans feel better about it.

The flipside of that coin is normalizing apparent corruption. The rest of the world might disagree with this being the better outcome.

What went on has been well reported by the NY times. I never said I didn't like anybody. I just said that a head of state intervening in a sporting event was unprecedented in recent history.

Am I the one who should take a step back. Slippery slopes these things ...

Whilst we debate footy and politics.

Occasional/sporadic, random surreal football related tunes to lighten the mood anyone?

OK, I'll start...

Until a head of state also got involved overtly - that is unheard of since the days of Mussolini .
Guys - it’s FIFA.

1962 Garrincha overturned ban to play in the finals after the Brazilian PM and Chili petitioned FIFA

1982 - France goal overturned mid game b/c Kuwaiti royal prince stormed the field.

I’m sure there’s more, but I’m not that interested in finding more of what we all already know to be true.

It wasn’t right then and it’s not right now, but it’s not “new”.

The story should be about team, players and game strategy instead it's about the corruption. A full US team got it's but kicked by a better team and better game plan with little rethinking by the US coach at half time. A just result and hope these upper level shenanigans cease for the rest of the Tournament. I vote to move on.

It's not the good argument you think it is, it's more of an own goal here.

Agree we should enjoy the rest of what's left. I promise to say no more on the subject.

Still trying to catch up on sleep lost to the England Mexico game...
I totally feel you man, my sleep is in the gutter, but I don't regret it I've seen some great games. And England-Mexico was well worth it.

Did I already say Pochettino was a clown? Oh yes I actually did, and you know what I'll say it again, he's a clown. Nobody liked his short time as a coach at PSG.

Yeah the US started attaching more near the end but that cost us that last goal. From my poor "football" knowledge it seems we should have started when down one point. They still would have beat us. Well the US is now more involved in a great sport as a result of our team and hosting games.

After Quatar it's day and night, this is great hosting, popular games in completely full gigantic stadiums is a great sight. So far I really enjoy this world cup!
