Do you have the prerequisite update applied?
I had it until 2020/04 and then it just stopped launching.
I have tried bunch of registry edits/changes based on a slew of recommendations.
Finally, I raised the white flag after this last suggestion:
2021/08/13 >>
Fix#10 another regedit NFG
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Input\Settings\proc_1\;
Set to 1

I don't believe you, or your friend.
Unless the app was malware and got quarantined by Defender - that’s the only way and that’s not being removed remotely.

I run an IT firm and see thousands of computers. Plenty of users have dodgy software. I’ve never come across any being removed my Microsoft. If they were doing this, I’m pretty sure I’d have heard by now.

The only time I ever heard of MS 'removing' software was back in the day, when the company used to run (or were associated with) an organization that encouraged employees to 'turn in' employers who were using unlicensed software. The Nail Your Boss operation. Then, on the tip, they'd send their auditors with the police to raid the operation.

The most famous case was probably Ernie Ball. According to their side of the story, the offending devices weren't even 'production' machines, but outliers that had been 'gifted'. Instead of being reasonable, MS used EB as an example of a malicious firm. After paying the fine, Ball said, 'screw it' and ditched all MS software. I don't know if they still have that policy, or if they've gone back to MS.

Yes, this has been my observations, as well.

Per Kaspersky: "Some file-sharing interfaces expose your computer directories without your knowledge, allowing attackers to view information you might not have intended to share." Open torrent ports also open entry doors for viruses, malware, ransomware and spy apps.
µS Defender (especially w/the "Home" versions) flags certain keywords in filenames, attempts to quarantine and may even remove downloaded (including *.zip) payloads, once scanned and analyzed for malware. "Pro" does provide the Defender notifications and also allows (w/admin privileges) to 'ignore' the threat.;)
If I am NOT mistaken, at the early days of Win10, the word "keygen" used to raise such alarms…

I hope some that read this (a new-ish attack vector) may think twice before clicking:
Cybersecurity researchers say hackers are using malicious PDFs to sneak malware onto your computer. The PDF, which arrives as an email attachment, has an embedded Word document, and displays a prompt stating that the document “has been verified”. If the embedded Word file is opened, it runs a macro that will download and run an RTF file that installs keylogger malware. It's 2022, folks -- are we still clicking on random email attachments?
It appears to be OS-agnostic, to boot.

I'm running Start11 with the menu set to look similar to Windows 10 and I keep it in the middle (i'd finally got used to the tiles when Windows 11 came along and a start button in the middle saves a lot of mouse miles on an UWQHD monitor).

Start11 works well. I've experienced the odd glitch, but that is to be expected as my PC in on the beta Insider build. Stardock usually release a new version of Start11 to fix any issues with a new Insider build within a few days.

Start11 works well
I have previously tried both (StartIsBack variants and StarDocks versions).
imo: Neither was that good, as some updates would ruin the user customizations/optimizations.
Actually, the websites for both do NOT show the taskbar in the vertical (left or right side) positions but both (sound like they) state that it is possible...

Start11 won't move the taskbar to the left or right. It can align to top or bottom and do this independently for primary and secondary monitors.

Going worse, huh?
No Rectilians found behind Dr. Gatestein Creature?

Kidding... Windows is Windows.
Telemetry and other thousands of ancillary services will -always- tell MS what happens in your pc.
W11 simply does this job in a more efficient way, that's all.
