Will upgrading the capacitor, improve the sound on this crossover?

I always buy capacitors with the biggest numbers written on them. That means they are better, right?

Mine have to say "Audiophile" so the electrons know how to behave.
 
That appears to be a film capacitor from Dayton. So no, you won't do much better. And what was said earlier about generic crossovers. A filter of any kind is designed to drive a specific impedance. Most drivers are all over the map until you add a compensation network, so-called "Zobel", or best yet design the crossover for the specific driver.

I'm pretty sure they re-label them. But in general, if they say it's polypropylene for example, it really is.

Practical filter found in better speakers use both approaches simultaneously :) The worst speakers just have a cap to not blow the tweeter and drive the bass/mid full range and hopes for it's natural roll off to be ok enough ?

I would get software if i was into DIY no one misses all the calculations , let a software do it for you . It's no a to complicated circuit when the design is ready you can buy separate components instead of this ready made filter and follow the schematics and assemble it yourself .

I have not tried in decades but todays software should support using the actual impedance curve or equivalent circuit of the drivers ? I have no recent experience sorry

I chickened out and went active to avoid huge nests of coils and capacitors.

In that case...I recommend silver foil oil-filled audiophile caps. The soundstage will be fifty feet wide! ;)
 
If you want to give "audiophiles" nightmares, point out that no cap on Earth will improve the sound, so no cap at all is the ultimate. So, they should be going active crossover.

I *think* this thread was tongue-in-cheek. I think.
 
Lets not make fun of this to soon. High quality cross over caps are important for two reasons.

First is lifespan and drift free performance as they age. Good caps stay in spec longer maintaining cross over performance over time.

Second is precision specifications. Quality caps have a higher specification tolerance. Perhaps 5% instead of 10% or 20%. Higher tolerance caps match specifications between the speakers better and therefore provide a more accurate crossover frequency between the speakers. This will help prevent image drift at the cross over region.

So I would say it does matter. Can you hear the difference. I'm not sure. Perhaps in cases of a bad mismatch. Never the less you want the speakers to match as close as possible. Cheers.
