Will a high quality xlr cable improve the sound?

Functioning cable is a functioning cable and both will sound the same. Aesthetics is another matter. Buy what you like and can afford as long as understand that it will sound the same. This extends beyond cables as well.

How long the cables last is a different matter. Chances are that better manufactured cables will outlast the others.

Macs :p :p :p. I have not decided yet, but one of the options for my retirement gift to myself is to replace my 5 old Rotels with 5 Macs. Smart thing to do would be the D class stuff, but then what is life without some jewelry.

Well I went for the £190 QED cable because I like it and I am not a Peasant. Digital amps sound crap to me I prefer class ab. How can you add room correction from two or more speakers? It dulls the music and is nothing but a fancy equaliser, which was very popular in the eighties.

Makes one wonder what you came to ASR for, as you're apparently wholly uninterested in audio science.

There are so many things wrong in the post that it is not worth responding. But yeah, welcome to ASR - you are in the right place and eventually might learn something. At the current level not really possible to engage. Give it some time though and follow the flow of the force...

Can anyone explain how the human brain processes sound? If you cannot then you are just guessing what sounds best.

I’ve seen so many posts here over the years where someone asks a question. And it’s answered politely. But they just don’t like the answer. The audiophile community has 50+ years of training people that the more you spend the better it sounds. It’s gonna take time to undo that conditioning. Be patient posters, most people will come around eventually.

Just because neither science (nor anyone) can irrefutably solve the mind body problem, is not a justification for claiming MIT cables 'lower the noise floor' or whatever nonsense.

This is correct but realistic is measurable. A transducer (microphone) is far more sensitive than the human ear and its output can be saved. A second transducer (amplified speaker) can playback the sound into that first transducer again and the output data can be compared and thus can verify the difference any component or venue makes. One can argue the closest to real is not the best but most would take the counter position.

That’s a strawman argument.

For example, I go to hear an orchestra (unamplified). Then I buy a recording of that performance.

I want the recording to sound as close as possible to experiencing the live performance.

If my playback system distorts the sound then it’s not what I originally heard.

Of course, I could opt to add distortion if I wanted to. But I would want that to be my choice and not imposed on me by my audio system.

So, objectively ‘best’ is when the audio system recreates the sound that was recorded without adding or subtracting anything.

It doesn’t matter how my brain processes the sound. What matters is that the sound waves it receives are the same (or as close as possible to) the original performance.

I feel deeply insulted now.

What digital amps have you experienced and in what way did they sound crap?

I use a MiniDSP Flex with Dirac.

It dulls the music and is nothing but a fancy equaliser,
Indeed, the point of an equalizer is to equalize, which is exactly why I use it. I find it does quite the opposite of dulling the music. I find it makes the music clearer to get rid of (i.e. compensate for, or EQ out) room modes.

which was very popular in the eighties.
Quite right too. Pity eq and tone controls and other useful features (loudness, mono button) went out of fashion in brit audio snobery.
