To start, I think the JBL "Classic" revival of older speaker models is overpriced and just trying to take advantage of what the old speakers were still selling for (if you could find a good pair, that was getting hard). I did lust after JBL L100s back in the day, at first was thinking L82 was their little brother but the 8" driver didn't sound right, seems I was thinking of the L88, as the L88 shared a 12" driver with the L100 (still remember that from when I was "testing" them frequently at the store settling on a set of speakers in the early 70s). I didn't buy them back then, tho. Went with Original Advents instead, which were lower priced (I was in high school and on a budget), looked a bit nicer and sounded almost as good as the L100 (didn't really consider the L88 altho I probably should have). A few years ago a pair of JBL 4311Bs came up for sale for reasonable $ not too far away, so finally kind of scratched that itch for the L100 that way finally. Do like the look of those cubed foam grills....but that replacement cost is ridiculous!
Still, always have had a soft spot for JBL. I do have a pair of the LSR305s, and for $200/pr I paid on sale I think those sound great. I also have various Studio 5 series speakers. I somewhat regretted not getting the 308s instead but more an impulse/lets see what these are about kind of buy and didn't really have a use for another set of active speakers. I remember the famous audiophile Arny Krueger (who used to have epic online "discussions" with Amir) had a set of 308s (three for L/C/R channels) and liked them a lot. I'm not sure if the 308s have the bit of hiss for nearfield use like the 305s do, tho, that might be a consideration but aside from that they seem to be very well regarded. I'd give them at least a test drive/listen....
Audiophile is a person, not a piece of hardware, though.
