WiiM Ultra

Thanks Brantome. How about the analog sub output? Is it active when digital output is chosen/used (allowing use of active digital speakers - or external DAC - along with an analog sub)?

The analog sub out can be used with the main analog, coax or optical outputs, and WiiM are investigating whether it can also be used with usb out.

But are analog main, coax and optical high pass filtered according to the low pass chosen for sub out?

Just adding a data point. I'm in the US and had an existing pre-order with Crutchfield placed on June 4.

The status changed today to "Order Placed" and then to "Shipped" about an hour later with a UPS tracking number assigned. Don't have a specific expected delivery date yet but am hoping for early next week.

An update -- my Ultra arrived today, a day early.

Setup was a breeze -- less than 10 minutes to get going and half of that time was a firmware update on initial boot after setting the wireless connection. Again, with the WiiM app on my phone, this is one of the easiest streaming systems to get going. Alexa setup was easy and the voice remote worked fine to select and play music from my Amazon Music subscription. The Ultra also had no problem connecting to my Qobuz account and playing music using the WiiM phone app. The player was also immediately listed as a Squeezelite player on my LMS server and played music from there. So, kudos for an easy-to-setup and use streamer.

Sound-wise, I've only listened to a smattering of music using some headphones (nothing fancy - Grado SR125e.) Sound was very good with plenty of clear volume at 50% the way up. Music so far has consisted of some classical, some classic rock and a bit of eclectic folk. Note these are not the headphones I commonly use (that's a pair of Hifiman Sundara's with a Schiit Midgard headphone amp) but I was pleased the sound quality I heard.

Next step is to move this into my living room system and see how it works in that setup. I'm particularly interested in how it will compare to my Schiit Lyr 3 preamp with a multibit DAC card and RPi 4 player. I'm curious if the Ultra will work as a preamp replacement for the Lyr itself as I'm quite fond of it's sound. However, I'm impressed enough at the moment, that short of uncovering some tragic flaw, the Ultra is a keeper even if it doesn't replace the Lyr. More to be revealed!

Amazon UK has randomly put up the price of the Ultra up by £10 today, god knows why. Still no stock probably for a while.

Is a pair of these cables enough to connect the Ultra to active studio monitors ?

You need to very closely read the manual for your active speakers. Those are the correct connectors... but the critical question is how the conductor wires are connected (or not connected) on the RCA and the XLR ends.

Also note: most such cables bought over the internet use a single coax conductor, which generally will work fine (provided wiring is correct as per above). However, please see other documents on the preferred approach that uses 2-conductor STP wire (e.g., Mogami's W2549) so that you can still benefit from the CMRR provided by the balanced input connection on the active speaker.

Note: based on my reading, the recommended wiring by Bill Whitlock is the way to go provided it is in agreement with the wiring schematic defined by your active speaker. An impedance matching resistor at the RCA end can make it that much better; but even without that, you will still gain a substantial amount of the total potential CMRR. So don't worry about adding such a resistor until after you have confirmed there is a noise issue in your environment to start with.

Is the DAC in this better than my Topping D30? Would be nice to combine my Apple AirPort Express and Topping D30 into one unit with a display.

Probably. I couldn't hear the difference with smsl do1000

Thanks for pointing that out. I just assumed it did. That's a big "no,no" for me now.
Mentioned in the Amazon product page and elsewhere, and here in the WiiM forum:

Please note: Airplay certification is still pending, and while we don't have a definitive timeline, we chose not to delay the launch of the WiiM Ultra. If you primarily use Airplay to stream music, we recommend waiting until it's certified or looking at other WiiM products.”

I just received a Wiim Ultra today. I had canceled my previous order, but decided to go ahead and get one for my office setup. I'm glad I did.

I still wish it had a coax input, but I came up with a solution for that.

I'm using the Ultra as a pre-amp, streamer, dac and headphone amp with line outs going to a single Fosi ZA3 amp with output to Sony SSCS5 speakers. A Sony SACS9 subwoofer is connected to the Ultra's sub out. Connected a blu-ray player to the optical in for playing CDs and a USB SSD drive with my ripped CD collection. A PC, a chromebox, Fire TV stick and a 4k blu-ray player are connected to an HDMI kvm switch going to a Samsung 4k monitor. HDMI arc output from the monitor goes into the HDMI input on the Ultra.

Amazon, Tidal and Qobuz streaming and playing from the USB SSD drive all work as expected.

Everything is working great except for one bug:

When headphone output is selected, the Ultra cuts off the regular line output as it should, but it is still sending output to the subwoofer. Not sure if that is a software or hardware design issue.

I've listened to the headphone output with my HD800S and the Chu 2 iems. More than enough power for the HD800s at output level 48 out of 100. 33 was a good level for the Chu 2. The headphone jack is 3.5mm. I wish they had a 1/4" jack instead or in addition to the small one.
