WiiM Ultra

I don't see why not.

After all, the room correction algorithm runs on your phone. Only the final EQ parameters get written to the WiiM.

Sure, the Mini may only be capable of 8 PEQ bands instead of 10, but making a second correction algorithm that only calculates 8 bands should be trivial.

If the automatic room correction is not added to the Mini, then it's because WiiM can't/won't allocate enough dev time to their entry level model or wants to keep automatic correction as a differentiating feature.

Not because of hardware constraints.
Fair enough points - Room Correction for the Mini has been like the hokey cokey ;)

To be fair I'm astounded it's offered at all at the price, really impressive. Maybe I've watched the wrong reviews, wasn't even aware of room correction until now.

Anyone here got any experience with the room correction at all?

Nearly everyone I would have thought.
Keith
It is only in beta testing currently, so not many of us have had the chance yet, unfortunately.

There's a dedicated thread over on the Wiim forum

Yeah.

But no.

It’s not meaningless.

No matter what the vote, they’re not going to come out now and say “Hey you lot, it’s £800!”.

And some were predicting £800.

So now you are happy it is not 800.
Not upset it is 450, say.
Yeah, no games here.

Hey.

I'm being lazy and didn't want to read thru everything and wanted to know if the Ultra is going to have balanced outputs.

Thanks

Not by the looks of things.

However, alongside the Ultra, WiiM are releasing ‘something else’. It’s not impossible it’ll be an ‘Ultra Balanced’. I doubt it, but who knows. The trade show where both are being launched opens on Monday, so we’ll know soon enough.

You can still get balanced output from the WiiM's RCA Line outs, but custom-made cables would be required.

Not expensive or super complicated, but also not buy->plug->play.

You mean something like the "balanced rca" khadas introduced with their tone-dacs?

I said.... 'say' i. e. an example, the marketing principle, not using the actual figures.

Sorry I meant a true balanced output weather thru xlr , 1/4 in or rca with a full 4 or 5 volts output not a 2 volt output

Understood.

You can make it a true balanced output with the right cable, but output voltage would remain at 2Vrms.

Apropos my previous post (the second device), whilst I have no indication at all as to what this would be, I do note this.

At the WiiM forums since the Ultra was announced, and specs firmed up, the two most common opinions I’ve seen have been “I don’t want a screen” and “I want balanced outs”.

My guess is that it’d probably be pretty easy for WiiM to have gone back to its engineers and say “Carry on with what you’d planned, but can we release a screen-less one with balanced outs at the same time?” Others would know better than I how much of an engineering nightmare this might be.

And it’d solve the puzzle of why they’re springing something at the last minute, instead of a long build up, with layers of pre-announcing.

But that’s really just a wild guess. It’d be nice to see it, though. It’d have “We’re listening!” written all over it.

In my opinion the word Ultra means everything and the best of everything " extreme " and in this case again in my opinion they missed the mark by not including xlr full voltage output. I guess I will wait and see what happens next.

I guess next in line will be Ultra Maxx or Ultra Pro or something along those lines.

Cheers.

All this is meaningless. Wiim are just playing a psychological game with everyone.

Give three prices. Ask everyone to vote. They'll all (or at least mostly) vote for the cheapest. Wiim will pick the cheapest.

They've just created market price willingness for the $350 they want to charge because everyone is so happy it is not one of the higher prices.

Oldest trick in the sales book - just implemented slightly differently.
What I find curious is that the WiiM Amp is £319 GBP (uk price, Amazon)

The Ultra, as far as I can tell, adds a screen and a phono stage (perhaps) and removes the power amplification and speaker connections. Unless screens are really expensive I'd expect it to be cheaper than the Amp, or the same.

My price expectation is set by the WiiM Amp.
