WiiM Ultra

It certainly sounds the same compared to wiim and wadax if the sound is taken out of the devices digitally.

This must not be forgotten. There are numerous DACs from which comparisons can be made between these two, and the same sound then comes out of the same DAC.

This audio world is already a pretty crazy hobby.

Conspicuous consumption. Remember the 'You Are Rich' app in the early days of the iPhone? It did nothing but show a picture of a ruby or something, for some ridiculous price. People bought it.
Ridiculous price? What are you talking about. IIRC it was only $7,500. Money well spend for a better ... errr ... for being better than others.

:P

I have an expensive dac... that I bought used for barely more than my Wiim Ultra.
It sounds better. Whether that's due to better engineering, better analog section, better driving my amp thru balanced cables... I really don't care. It was money well spent to get improved clarity and image precision.

Everything in my system is old & used. It's the only way I can afford "high end" sound.
The Wiim is the ONLY thing in my kit that was bought new.

Which DAC is that?

Geek Pulse Infinity.
That is audibly transparent - just like 95+ % of all the dacs measured here.

It won't sound any different - if compared in a controlled blind test - from any of the others.

I keep saying the same thing about McIntosh but for some reason people still love those as well. ;)
I have one and I can say, a little Douk here plays exactly like my 30 year old MCIntosh MA6800... I confess I thought this wouldn't be possible, but I tested it and had several people play it on alternate days to tell me if they could see any difference... no one could. I like my MCIntosh, it's beautiful, etc., but to say it plays better... unfortunately not, these little Class Ds today are monsters playing...

You know what's funny? I switched from Tidal to Qobuz and I'm liking the sound through the WiiM Ultra much better now.

Does the Wiim allow a mono output to external speakers/amp?
Where is it in the settings?

This group here has changed the way I think about audio and what to spend. I can only be grateful. I continue to buy devices that are even expensive, but not because they sound better, but for aesthetic reasons, some features, sometimes software that has better response, finish...... I would never spend $10,000 on cables... that's ridiculous. I have well-finished cables for aesthetic reasons, but they cost $40 or $50... which is already a lot... something that any wire could do the same thing for $5.

Hi folks!

Looks as though this thread took a major veer off topic and has been reported.

Please stick to the WiiM discussion and take other stuff to another thread. If I am left with either deleting or finding a place for it, may not like my choice. Will review with the OP as well.

Thanks for your cooperation!

I just realized that the Wii U Ultra menu has a digital filter setting (default is linear phase fast roll-off filter).

Which setting do you use it on?

Have you had a chance to hear any differences between the various settings, and which setting might bring out more detail in the music?
Thanks.

The default setting.

I couldn't reliably tell a difference anyway, let alone call one of the other settings "better".

I would always use linear phase fast. Will result in lowest distortion. (IMO)

But in reality - most people (me included) won't be able to hear much - if any - difference between the filter selections.

Having said that if you have it - you can try it for yourself. You don't need to ask anyone.

In fact, I was asking precisely because I couldn't hear any difference.

I was thinking of my inattentive ear, but apparently the difference, if it's there, is practically imperceptible.
See you soon.

Upon review with OP, this thread has accomplished his intent and there are plenty of others.
