"We", kemo sabe? :) Yes, that's a limited definition, but not what would necessarily qualify as a true sub to me at least.

Then as I say, you’re guilty of high redefinition.

Any dictionary definition, or common usage if the term ‘subwoofer’ is the one I offered, more or less.

Companies and shops manufacture and sell items calling them ‘subwoofers’ which fit the definition. I’m not sure there’s a single manufacturer out there who makes a sub which goes below 20Hz who don’t also make one which doesn’t go below 20Hz, and call that a subwoofer.

Whether it’s magazines, forums, or just chat between audio enthusiasts, the term subwoofer is used to mean a box which produces frequencies lower than your main speakers can.

No one has the right to redefine what a word means, contrary to its dictionary definition and common usage. That’s just how language works.

I think there are quite a few subs than can do well above 80-100hz. Good luck with the gear you have in mind.
Yes, just not the same ones that go very deep with SPL and SQ at both ends.

From 20Hz that'd be approaching 3 octaves.

I'd love to be proven wrong, especially if affordable!

even just with a driver to DIY, recos welcome!

12" is a bit large for my form factor, 10" would be much better.

Otherwise, solid subwoofer for the price.

I nearly bought two of them, knowing they'd be a compromise on one hand but potentially future proofed on the other, anticipating Wiim being able to automatically integrate them. Ultimately I figured they'd be a compromise too far for me.

2 Wiim subs is a great deal. And this can be setup wirelessly too, which allows for many more placement options. Wiim does good stuff for modest price points.

When I checked with Wiim you cannot currently connect 2 subs wirelessly independantly and thus align them independantly.

Too bad, woulda coulda shoulda been an easy way to get 2.2 stereo bass
 
One wired and one wireless would be common.
 
Note that, if these get to "good value" price point, they can work with any preamp

via analog wired line level signal input, no other Wiim gear around.

The Wiim Home app still allowing for (some?) DSP options for controlling these subs only, e.g. PEQ.

Time domain - flight time delays, phase tuning - I guess still requires external DSP though.
 
as "bass augmentators" does anyone know their top frequency F3 point?

Stereo is pointless for true sub frequencies which are non directional, but for bass augmentation purposes, above ~80Hz or so, I agree would be useful.
Note that I am no longer "so certain" about this, and hope to test it for myself one day

I already have, albeit my room my ears but that's all that matters ultimately. I've tried raising the crossover to my subs to 120Hz and there's no change in the sound stage. There's a change to how the instruments sound but that's down to the speakers and subs.
Fwiw I've decided I like this configuration: Wiim roomfit to b&k
Crossover 75Hz
Full range output to subs
Crossover range for mains
PEQ tweaked for taste based on SPL meter.

I've got 2 x BK subs that are 15" enclosed drivers. Full range takes them to 120Hz, it just sounds nice.
 
My mains are OG LS50s and many members whose opinions I've valued have told me they are best HPF crossed high, some even say 170Hz at the lowest.

I'm thinking now, rather than my DIYing a pair of MBM Couplers "basstands" to collocate, maybe a pair of these would be better value?

Certainly easier! and DSP included, at least self-contained for these units.

Erin's CEA-2010, says bottom F3 is 40Hz, strong 40 - 50 Hz but

25 - 30 Hz starts compressing heavily ~80dB ?

30 - 40Hz don't push too hard, maybe 85-98 dB ?

boundary gains **in room** contribute to that SPL
& RoomFit boosting?

no pseudo anechoic measurements without boost published ? for outdoor use cases ?

still need 3rd-party verification of upper F3 ( Wiim says 200Hz)

sub's built-in filter can handle signals up to 200Hz
set LPF to blend well with LS50s, test overlapping

Maybe no other MBM Couplers needed?

Side note PS - these are Active speakers, but unless a single sub, in a simple 2.1 system managed by a Wiim preamp + DSP,

not "actively managed" right??
