This is a review and reduced measurements for WiiM Pro stereo streamer and preamplifier. It is kindly loaned to me by a member and costs US $149.

I didn't mess with the front controls but used the app on my Android phone. The device provides rich set of functionality that is easily exposed through the app.

Level of connectivity is stunning at this price point:

We not only have digital out but also analog input.

I upgraded the unit and connected to it over Ethernet.

WiiM Pro Streamer Measurements
I started with streaming using Roon media player and capturing RCA output at maximum volume:

I am disappointed at high level of second harmonic distortion which pegs SINAD at just 15 bits. Performance is the same as using Toslink:

I like to see a SINAD above 100 dB as to preserve 16 bit content.

Fortunately using Toslink digital out by setting it to 24 bits gives you "bit exact" output:

This means you can use a higher performance DAC and get far better response.

Using analog out, signal to noise ratio is good:

As is jitter although the measurement floor is occupied with fair bit of noise:

The input ADC, as is typical, is not as good as the DAC:

And has that channel delay differential to boot. Switching to digital out did not fix that either:

I think we have good enough picture at this point.

Conclusions
Both the software capabilities and input/outputs are exemplary for any streamer let alone at this price point. This is countered by a DAC that is a notch lower in performance than what I wish to see. Fortunately you can use an external DAC to remedy that (or use another WiiM streamer with a better DAC).

As is, I can't recommend the WiiM Pro streamer. It just fails to reach my minimum bar.

As always, questions, comments, recommendations, etc. are welcome.

If you want the analogue side to work well the pro plus gives you that.
Not much more, also comes with a handy remote.

I always prefer to have a remote. An app can be discontinued, making the device obsolete.
That said, a remote will not support all functions...

It’s aggressively priced and “exemplary” in feature set and software implementation but its entirely adequate distortion performance earns it a “not recommended”? Can’t say that makes much sense to me.

The app is required for full usage, there are a million settings. But if you use roon you don't need to use it on a daily basis, and the physical play pause button, like we had on CD players, is very nice. This is probably true for things like Spotify connect as well.

Since you have to add a better performing DAC like SMSL SU1 or D1, interconnect cables and the remote the cost is close to WiiM Pro Plus, a one box solution.

Thanks for the test Amir. :)

Does the WiiM Pro add that much vs the WiiM Mini? If we assume that in both cases we add a good external DAC to them?

Why WiiM Pro when the WiiM Pro Plus with a good built-in DAC is available?
(at an additional cost about what a good external DAC costs)

Mostly speculation on my part. Maybe the WiiM Pro fills a gap in the market?

I think, the distortion from the dac is inaudible for majority of audio enthusiasts and is acceptable given the device’s price and feature set. Also the distortion is second order dominated, that second order spike will be very likely masked by the fundamental. I rated it with "Fine."

The analog ADC inputs are practically unusable... they might as well not have been included: the price would be even lower. And then it might have gotten a recommendation.

We use the coax out connected to our MiniDSP Flex.

The EQ in the WiiM is handy for tone controls but never with a boost as that can cause clipping (system volume control is the Flex).

Analog input is good enough for vinyl. For which this may be suited:

Thanks for this review.

Another cheap streamer.

Personnaly, I'm invested in BlueOS ecosystem, so a second hand Node makes more sense for me.
Especially if you want to attach an external DAC, like I measured here:

But this one makes perfect sense if you start from zero and already have a good DAC hanging around...

I use this as a toslink transport. And also because the app and ease of use for the rest of household is excellent for kitchen etc. I really cant fault it.

And it then lets me pontificate with complicated alternate setups ...which probably sound no better! :):)

..and I paid £70 for it second hand..

It's $150 and can't keep up with a $10 dongle. A transparent DAC would have cost next to nothing, and the need to fix the phase issue on the ADC should have been self-evident. As it stands it's not a terrible product, but it's worse than it should be.

The only way to use this is as bit perfect streamer to another DAC. I think of it as a better looking mini with a coax out for an extra $50.
For anything more you need Pro or Ultra for sure.
I think when used in this simple way it is a good product, due to coverage of most streaming services, eg; Amazon Music is not covered by many other manufacturers and room fit / EQ etc.
