WiiM Pro - Review & Measurements (Streamer)

If i use the optical out to a SMSL SU-1 which outputs to a Aiyima A07 MAX (with 1V input sensitivity) should I set the volume limit to 90% (which should be -6db =~1volt) or would you use 100% volume and let the SU-1 output max signal to the amp (which is not maxed of course)?

Thanks a lot for any help!

I would use max output (2V) into the Amp.

wondering if change to a Power Delivery USB cable (PD) can have positive impact to the sound quality?

Maybe with some isolation between power and data parts.
That can only be achieved with a dedicated USB isolation device. Not with a PD Cable, and not even with separate power and data cables (the 0V/gnd of the two cables would be joined together in the DAC, so electrically no difference to a single cable. Except that with a separate PSU, you are only increasing the possibilities for creating ground loops in your system.

Try and use what sounds the best.

Anyone have any luck getting volume normalization to work for Spotify connect? It doesn't work through the WIIM pro for some reason.

I don’t think it works at all for Spotify Connect no matter what you’re casting to.
See https://forum.wiimhome.com/threads/bitperfect-vs-99-volume.1800/post-31774 for example

Edit: just tried to an echo device as well (don’t have anything else to try) and volume normalisation, crossfade etc are all greyed out too in settings when using Spotify Connect. Looks like those settings only apply when you’re not casting.

Ok, forgive the complete newbie question.

What advantage does this streamer give me over HEOS? I have a new Denon AVR-x4800h with the newer, and easier to use, HEOS interface. I'm mostly looking for as simple as possible a way to let my wife access Amazon Music and play through the Denon easily. It's so easy on the phone do do it for the car or earbuds, but the steps to do it with HEOS on the Denon get her confused.

Can she just use airplay or Google cast from within the Amazon app to stream to the Denon? That will likely be the simplest

If I remember correctly, casting will not enable the HiRes or Ultra High Res files. There was something about why that didn't work, because that's what I wanted to do, since she could you the Amazon app (Android btw) which is a great UI

Does your wife care about hi res?

She shouldn't - they'll make no audible difference.

I should clarify. The Standard quality with Amazon Music is MP3 (unacceptable). What they call HiRes is CD quality, and Ultra High Res is beyond that. So, we want at least the CD quality.

Amazon Music doesn’t use “hi res” as such to describe their offerings - its lossy MP3 tracks (SD or Standard Definition up to 320Kbps) are generally served by its Amazon Music Free, Amazon Music Prime and Amazon Music Unlimited single device plans. For Amazon Music Unlimited individual and family plans, the offerings are 16bit HD (high definition) 44.1kHz or 48kHz, or 24bit UHD (ultra high definition) up to 24/192.

In terms of what any WiiM device can offer over Heos, you can play Amazon Music bit perfect up to 24/192 either via the WiiM app, by casting using AlexaCast from the Amazon Music app, or by asking Alexa. Heos can do the first via its own app, but casting or playback via Alexa via the Heos skill is HD at best, if indeed not just SD. WiiM devices can also be in an Alexa multi room music (MRM) group along with echos, which again Heos devices can’t do.

Yes, you are correct in your definitions of Amazon Music. I do have the Amazon Unlimited Music version. My main objective:

1. Play the music in at least Amazon HD (similar to CD quality)
2. Make the switching of watching TV to playing music as easy as possible for my wife (using a Denon AVR-x4800h and a Google Pixel 8 phone)
3. Have the interface UI be as much like the Amazon Music app as possible so as to make it easy for my wife to choose the music she wants to listen to (meaning have the albums or lists of songs appear and other suggestions and playlists easy to look at).

It appears I can connect to the AVR via the Amazon Music app on the phone. And use Amazon's interface. Perhaps this is what I thought in the past wasn't at least CD quality, but it is? Is that correct?

It appears #2 and #3 are solved:

I just tried this. Seemed to work OK. It appears to have automatically launched HEOS, though, and changed to 2ch stereo (which is what I want). And it appears I don't have to interact with HEOS at all. But the app tells me that it can't display the resolution while streaming. How do I know if it's at least HD? Using the "Info" menu on the Denon, it simply displays PCM and Stereo and nothing else

If you are casting to your AVR from the Amazon Music app and have enabled the Heos skill (which you’ll need to have done to make your avr visible to the amazon music app and Alexa) then you may be getting just SD - that’s all I got in the past when I had a Heos Link HS2 but their firmware (and Alexa) may have moved on since then, but I’d doubt it. You used to be able to open the Alexa app and see what was playing on your account and it would show the HD badge if that’s what was playing - might be worth seeing if that shows the resolution as for some reason the Amazon Music app doesn’t want to show that.

I ditched my Heos link when the WiiM Mini came out and get all the way up to 24/192 no matter which app I use. I feed that over optical into my amp which does display the playback resolution

Only other info I can find is the sample rate, via the web control function or via the menus on my Denon AVR -3600, so I would assume the 4800 would also be able to display this.
When casting from Amazon Music app (android) to my AVR 3600 everything is resampled to 44.1khz.
