Hey all,
Anyone using the WiiM Pro Plus preamp as a preamp?
What are your thoughts please.
Peter

Very good, and output is adjustable
Not by volume, but in audio setting

But analogue is converted to numeric
For playback

Still affordable and simplier to use, better than blue sound and tidal connect

And you have lovely, simple to use room correction (with graphic analysis, it show where your room hurt) and it manage sub even if it’s bot suppose

Also 3 curves, flat, harman and b&k, lot’s of tweak in the gear upper right of room correction

I was wondering about this. I'm relieved actually because I want the phono to go through PEQ

What, precisely, is Your concern about this item?

here what you will see and tweak

don't forget when enter room correction to go upper right gear for tweak!

i forgot to mention, wiimamp has sub management, plus don't but don't bothers, it room tuning anyway, it just frequency will be up, but fun thing is you see where room hurt!

regards

Hello Salt,
I’ve read in forums that some are running the WiiM Pro Plus through a standalone DAC… - does this indicate that some consider the WiiM DAC is not the best, or something else.
- Is the WiiM preamp considered a competent preamp?

Hey VF,
The power amp will be either a Cambridge Audio 100 w/c or a Hypex nCore D class 170 w/c

Although I am an absolute Cambridge fan, I would listen to/compare the amplifier before buying it and pay a little attention to whether there are any failures with the device. I found the amplifiers of the last few years not to be that great in terms of sound compared to, for example, the Topping PA5, Sabaj A30 or the larger Yamaha (from A-S 701/1000). I have also noticed several failures.

Amir has just tested the new WiiM Amp Pro with really good values and good performance, perhaps that is a good alternative.

Thankyou for your input VF.
I did read Amir’s review, very positive indeed.
I’ll be taking on the amp with the proviso I can return it if it’s not suitable.
Enjoy you day.
Best,
Peter

Had the Wiim Pro Plus initially connected via optical out to a Topping DX3pro, but it sounded lifeless with ample dynamic depth. Now I connected it via line-out (internal DAC) to a FX-audio L07 class-D amplifier and this match is very nice sounding once the EQ of the Wiim Pro Plus was tuned in. Minimal EQ changes were made tough.

Regards, RonL

Could be because the amplifier has more power than the Topping.

Edit: sorry couldn't resist. On a more constructive note - what amplifier was downstream of the Topping? If it was a different one, you changed three things in your setup. This makes it very difficult to draw a meaningful conclusion. Provided this is what you wanted to get out of the exercise of course.

I just recently tried to use my Wiim Pro Plus inputs and found that both the Optical in and Line in inputs cause static during certain parts of music. Interestingly it is on passages that are a bit higher in frequency and where the level of the music peaks a bit. For example on Patricia Barbers Cafe Blue CD, when she hits a higher note and most notably on words that start with an "S" it seems for some dumb reason a distinct buzz is emitted from the channel where that part of the music is coming from. To be more specific... During the track The Thrill Is Gone, when she sings "Birds were singin', skies were blue" or where she sings "So why pretend..." it happens each and every time. So weird. If I connect the cd player directly to my Fosi ZD3 DAC... the sound is clean and no static buzz. So it is definitely the Wiim preamp doing something it should not.

So in short... would I recommend using it as a preamp... nope... not if you like your speakers.

I'm using Wiim Pro Plus as a preamp (with Apollon Amp).
Great combo :)

Main pro: ability to set volume from Spotify when using Spotify Connect.
Main cons (for me): lack of HDMI eArc.

Interesting. Would be nice if you could get more to the bottom of this.

I am in communication with Wiim Support so we'll see where it goes. It definitely seems to be related to the preamp on the Wiim and parts of music with sibilance.

Which song and around what timestamp?
I am going to receive WiiM Pro Plus tomorrow, I can try to check on the same if you share the details.

To expound a bit on what I stated above, and for example, on Patricia Barbers Cafe Blue CD during the track The Thrill Is Gone, when she sings "Birds were singin', skies were blue" or where she sings "So why pretend..." it happens each and every time. It appears to be specifically on the words that start with an "S". So this is why I strongly suspect it has to do with certain songs, verses, etc. that have sibilance.
