So it appears that Last.fm isn’t scrobbling when I use Tidal Connect and the Wiim Mini. Anyone aware of a workaround?

If I connect a Wiim Mini to my SMSL RAW MDA1 via optical (for added convenience vs using my laptop) should I expect the Mini to have any impact - good or bad - on the audio quality I get from the MDA1 to my headphones? Saw a video on YT over the weekend that suggested it might have a detrimental effect...
How are you connecting the laptop to the MDA1? If via optical or coax any differences are minimal. Unmeasurable and inaudible.
I received a WiiM Mini late yesterday. Never streamed before. At least wireless streamed. Tried two Toslink cables, old glass and the gimme WiiM cable. Think I will use the gimme cable.
Only using it with internet radio so far. Mainly a local classical station to compare internet to broadcast quality. The RAW MDA1 is super overkill for the local radio stations internet streams. Must be the lowest bit rate possible. Have a DaySequerra M4 HD that outputs AES and balanced analog.
The HD Radio quality really has improved over time. The streaming audio quality sounds the same as 7 - 8 years ago. Just runs more reliably.
The WiiM Mini works perfectly in my system. RAW MDA1 into an intergrated amplifier.
It just needs to have a streaming service to shine.

Most of the streaming servies i.e. Amazon Music / Tidal etc. will give you a months free trial if you wanted to try one, at least you could see if you felt there was any benefit but also try the higher reolution that's available to see what you think.

I thank you for the input. Really want to try Qobuz. Concerned that in three months it will be unused.
I rarely sit down and listen. System is up in an open loft area and is like a multi room system. Plays into rooms with two story ceilings.
Playing an internet station just works. There was one from Athens that was excellent. Went away during COVID.
But every now and then I go sit down in front of the speakers to see how it is playing. Too much nervous energy to sit still very long.
Unless reading my Bible. Turn music off for Rosary or when my wife is home. Luckily she works and is go - go when not working.

Are there any limitations of the room correction in the Wiim Mini compared to other Wiim products? I was thinking of using one of these as a cheap way to provide parametric EQ and room correction, between my HDMI audio extractor (connected to Apple TV), and my SMSL SU-1 DAC (which feeds an Outlaw receiver). What are the downsides? I've looked at the Wiim site but find it a bit hard to find in-depth information on the EQ features of the different devices. My takeaway from this review was that if I use the optical out, then the sound quality should be excellent.

Edit—oh I may have found a flaw in my my plan... no optical in on the Mini?

For reference. This is a screenshot of the eq on the Mini

Leaving aside the lack of an optical input on the Mini (you’d need at least a Pro or Pro Plus), the WiiM Mini doesn’t yet have the ability to apply EQ/PEQ on top of room correction/RoomFit. Given it’s recently missed out on qobuz Connect and YouTube Muisc support, it’s clear its hardware capacity is approaching its limit (if it’s not already at it) so I wouldn’t hold my breathe for any major improvements in room correction albeit much of that seems to be done in the cloud

Thanks for the comments. Now I think I see it's the Wiim Pro that I might want if I'm only looking for digital processing.
Wiim Pro also offers Qubuz connect, the Wiim Mini not.

I am still happy with my Wiim Mini connected via optical out, and using Tidal connect.

This little thing is amazing. Using it as a source and preamp for these little Fosi V3 monos with my ancient Dynaudio Contour 1.8 MkII speakers, Amazon UHD streaming, better than anything I ever owned.

I have a collection of CDs; do I really want to invest in a transport and DAC to listen to them when I can access everything via streaming?

Better DAC than one available in the little Wiim mini, do I even hear the difference?

Might be easier to just rip them to flac/alac, load them up on your phone and play them in the wiim app.

I ripped all my CDs to FLAC and saved them to my network server. With DLNA I can play them via the Wiim app using the 'Home music share' under the 'Browse' option.

There are many possible upgrades, I'm a huge WiiM fan, started with minis, then pros and then a pro plus so have had at least 10 with my multi room scenarios ... I thhen bought a 2nd hand Chord Qutest which made a big difference ...I also thought I'd try a Bluesound Nano in comparison and they do have an edge over the WiiMs.

All depends where you want to go and how much you want to spend, there's always upgrades available but an SMSL SU1 would be an upgrade ... or if you have a return window open a WiiM Pro Plus which has a better DAC.

Welcome to ASR !

Occasionally some of my favorite tracks are unavailable on my (Tidal) streaming service. Consider ripping your CD collection for that possibility.

There are DAC's that measure better in SINAD than the one used in the WiiM Mini. If I was a trained listener, I wonder if I would perceive a difference in double-blind testing.

@Monster

I ripped a few CDs and set up DLNA, now I can see and play them through 'Home music share', convenient but time-consuming. I also feel I am getting better quality through streaming (may be an illusion).

@Witterings
I think I caught the audiophile bug again after many years. Now I am considering DAC options.
What do you all think of the Topping E70? It has some features I would want, including a preamp and balanced output, an optical input, so I could use Wiim as a Wi-Fi streamer.
