Wiim announce WiiM Amp Ultra

Nice specs for such a small device. Looks good.

I would love to have a 10-band parametric EQ on my ampliifer, much better then Dirac.

Hi Mike,

Why do you say you'd prefer a "10-band parametric EQ on my ampliifer, much better then Dirac".

Genuinely interested in your views as I intend buying the Wiim Amp Ultra to drive a pair of B&W AM01 outdoor speakers combined with a 12" velodyne sub crossed over around 80hz. I am also interested in using the EQ to room correct (2 walls at right angles and two open sides).

Hopefully the sub will take a lot of stress off the amp as it will not be required to drive low frequencies. The amp puts out 100W into 8ohms and the B&W speakers have a sensitivity of 87db and I do not require "average" listening levels greater than 90db at 4metres, maybe 100db peaks at worst, so hopefully there will be no audible distortion.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you may have, or others, on this set up.

how bad is the latency on the Amp Ultra? I read it's around 50ms, which would be really bad in regards to lip sync and gaming
Even with the following engaged in the Wiim Home application for optical input from a television, I haven't noticed any problems:

WiiM Amp Ultra is a very good device, in my humble opinion, I use it with my Revel M16 and SVS SB-1000 Classic sub.

I have to say that I agree with @Mike_Trueman that 10-bands of PEQ per channel can be preferable to Dirac, since with PEQ have more control over the correction. I'll typically calculate my PEQ filter values with REW, but recently RoomFit has improved as well - here's my results using either approach with the WiiM Amp Ultra.

Compared to PEQ, Dirac has IMO a significant benefit of being more use-friendly while still giving very good results and having some flexibility. So which is preferred will depend largely on the user I guess.

Note that with most WiiM devices you can now use RoomFit (2x10 bands of PEQ) together with EQ (another 2x10 bands of PEQ). I use EQ slots to load a correction profile based on anechoic data for my loudspeakers and then RoomFit slots to load my low-frequency room correction.

Hi Dom,

Thank you for your comments. It appears that at 100W, a transparent streamer and DAC plus EQ and sub out, the Ultra Amp is a no brainer. Never been a better time for us music junkies. Very impressive product if you don't need extreme spl levels above say 95db peaks.

Another question, the Amp Ultra does not support Airplay, so does that mean my family and guests will be unable to stream to it using their own phones with say Spotify connect, without first downloading the Wiim App?

e.g with a Sonos system you can stream using your phone as a remote without the Sonos App.

Thanks in advance.

Spotify Connect works on all devices, Apple Windows Android doesn't matter.

The Amp Ultra not having AirPlay, does not prevent Spotify Connect from working on Apple.

Family and guests can stream to the Amp Ultra via Spotify Connect, without installing the WiiM Home App.

The Wiim Ultra as "one out of many" sources going to a HP amp seems pretty straightforward, use the USB output into a good DAC.

But when using it as a power amp for outside source signals, should I use the analog input over the TOSlink? Weird to me they left out Coax input ?

Also how well does it work as a Squeezelite audio player? Is the WiiM Home app as good as Squeezer or the web interface?

> when using it as a power amp for outside source signals

Does the "multi Wiim coordination" extend to using one Ultra

say an Amp Ultra driving my rear satellites

to set room correction EQ applied to all the other Amp Ultra + speakers?

Or do you need to copy/paste profiles around?

If the latter, I guess the Amp Ultra EQ in this scenario best limited to per-speaker correction...

and Loudness contour volume control needs to be separately implemented upstream as well.

...

Enhancement request - Cluster of Amp Ultra's, one is doing Room Correction feeding all the other nodes, others only per-speaker correction locally but combined with that central RC

One unit doing the Loudness contour volume control for all.

And maybe another for ad-hoc user PEQ.

If they ever make a good headphone amp, it would handle profiles for different HPs, let that unit toggle the Room Correction off when the speakers get disabled

> when using it as a power amp for outside source signals

The included EQ feature could handle crossover filtering separate for each speaker pair, right?

How to connect the multiple Wiim's in the same room / system? Analog patches or

digital Linkplay over Ethernet, Group Lead handles the source, rest are Followers.

AI tells me

Unlike the WiiM Ultra, the Amp Ultra is not equipped with an RCA line-out for connecting to a separate power amp.

USB audio output: While the Amp Ultra lacks a standard pre-out, it does have a USB audio output. This can be used to send a digital signal to an external USB DAC, though using this will disable the internal power amp and speaker outputs.

...

so Linkplay over Ethernet is the only workaround for the "only one output at a time" rule

any designated WAU can be used as streamer-source for the cluster, at the same time as power amp for the local speaker(s)

please confirm, or correct if any of the above is wrong

You don’t use the WiiM home app as the device is just a player - you use your normal LMS control point and choose the WiiM as an output

Correct

I wouldn’t describe grouping WiiM devices as them having multiple outputs. It just means the audio source is sent to the main device in the group while each still has its own sole output.

Yes

Thanks so much!

I did say "workaround for"

Otherwise would need an additional Ultra dedicated as streamer-source / pre-amp

Gives the flexibility to get a bunch of WAU units just to use as dumb high current power amps for each HT channel

and the WAUs can always be repurposed, so many features you're getting for "FREE" including multi groups for other rooms, PEQ...

The Wiim app is supposed to work as an LMS control point for all the squeezelite player nodes.

My question is, does it perform that function as well as the "normal" ones?

If not, what do LMS-experienced users reco for that function ?

I disagree. WiiM devices have the squeezelite client which makes them look like a player, pure and simple. The WiiM app isn’t an LMS control point unless you use the obsolescent LMS UPNP media interface plugin which presents the LMS server as a UPNP server that the WiiM app then sees, which to my mind defeats the point of WiiM devices having the squeezelite client.

If not, what do LMS-experienced users reco for that function ?
The Material Skin interface from a browser is what I use

WiiM app isn’t an LMS control point
Aha thanks then I was misinformed.

> Material Skin

Looks great! Can you suggest how to make an Android home screen bookmark launch as if a standalone app in a non-default browser?

Or is the Material apk at Fdroid better?

In your opinion, if I change the current configuration of:

Wiim Ultra plus Wiim Vibelink, will I get better sound quality with the new Wiim Amp Ultra?

Perhaps, since it has an integrated preamp and power amp, it should be better engineered? (It doesn't have external RCA connections.) That's just my humble opinion, of course...

In terms of convenience, the Wiim Amp Ultra is definitely a winner.

Thank you very much.

No, only possibly detectable in the very rare context I outlined above, and that's just SPL not SQ.

unless your connection between the two is compromised by external interference or something
