WiiM Amp dead after Wi-Fi setup, A98 module won't boot

Hey all, bit of a long shot but hoping someone here has been inside one of these. I grabbed a WiiM Amp really cheap second hand, the seller had it down as faulty/for parts because he couldn't get it running, said the light just went white then red. Figured for the money it was worth a shot and probably just needed setting up properly.

When I first powered it on it actually looked fine, showed up in the WiiM Home app straight away and I could see it sitting in setup mode. I put my wifi details in and that's where it all went wrong, it just hung on "loading" forever and never connected. Tried it a few times, same every time. So I figured I'd go wired instead and plugged an ethernet cable in. It rebooted itself when I did that, and ever since it's been stuck, boots up flashing white like normal then settles on slow flashing red and just stays there.

Now it's basically a brick. Doesn't show in the app anymore on wifi or ethernet, it's not putting out its own setup hotspot, and nothing in bluetooth either. On ethernet the port lights come on but it never pulls an IP, can't find it on the router at all. I even hooked it straight to my laptop direct and there's no arp response, total silence. Holding the volume knob to factory reset does absolutely nothing no matter how long I hold it. Power cycled it a ton, tried a different mains lead, no difference.

I got in touch with WiiM and they checked the serial, told me it never received an OTA update and that it's a hardware fault on the network module. They don't sell the module on its own and they've got no repair centre in Europe, so they basically said send it back to the seller, which I can't do since it was a for-parts sale.

I've had it open and honestly there's nothing obviously dead, no bulging caps, no burnt bits, the amp and power side all look healthy. The board's marked A98MG V02 so it's the same LinkPlay module that's in loads of other stuff.

So before I give up on it, has anyone here actually brought one of these A98 modules back to life over the serial console? I'm fine with soldering and I've got a USB to TTL adapter ready, I just don't know where the UART pads are on this board or what baud rate to use, and whether you can wipe the config from the bootloader to force it back into setup mode. If anyone has the pinout or has done this on a WiiM/Arylic/whatever that uses the same module I'd really appreciate a nudge in the right direction. Happy to post some close up photos of the board if it helps.

Thanks!

Welcome to ASR! Pictures of your amp PCB and the A98 module would be helpful, since there seem to be multiple revisions of both out in the wild. I can see some A98 PCBs in an image search where there are 10 solder pads directly above the AP6355 for a connector which I assume would be JTAG. But it's not present on other revisions.

From how you describe the error, my gut feeling would be a corrupted EEPROM. So I would start with some "blind" probing around there for shorted SMD caps or resistors and - if possible - check the crystals for a good clock signal. If there are marked voltage test points, those should also be checked.

Can you get another 'for parts' unit and swap the network module?
If Wiim are right about the fault, I think you'll be lucky to fix the module....

Does the module look like this?:

Or anything on AliX?:

It is also concerning that if you are a European buyer, Wiim have no repair centre.

Yes, the module is marked A98MG V02 and has a metal shield over it, looks very similar to the Rakoit photo.

My main question before ordering: would a generic A98module (with standard LinkPlay firmware) actually work in the WiiM Amp board? I assume it would come with the 4Stream firmware rather than WiiM's custom firmware, would the WiiM Home app still recognise it, or would I be stuck with a different app?

Difficult to be sure about firmware in the module. It's possible that they just program MAC addresses, and possibly other config comes from the main system board. Not sure what else the module needs though. I'm at the end of what to suggest, but experiments can be fun...

I'd say chances are 50/50 with another module.

Could be just generic and software controlled. Could be they don't want other modules coming into WiiM space.

Depending on the price I'd try it.

For this price I'll give it a shot, nothing to lose xD. I'll report back once it arrives and I've tried it :)

What could possibly go wrong? .

There is some kind of manual here; not sure it it helps to match against the current module...
