Why Yamaha Called It Buffer?

A buffer is a generic name for a gain or digital stage that prepares the signal for the main stages, sort of like a preamp.

A buffer doesn't have to be unity gain, it can have some gain. What makes it a buffer is what it goes between. If it separates two stages, and creates a high impedance to the earlier, and provides a low output impedance to what follows, then it's a buffer.
