Why I hate tariffs

Company in EU sent me an amplifier to review. It arrived a week or two ago. Today UPS sends me a bill. Claims that 10 cents, yes, 10 cents is due for tariffs. But they add $14 for processing. :( Imagine buying a $7 item. The processing fee alone is 200%. I guess the only good thing is that they charge nearly half as much as DHL.

So we create a problem with tariffs and when countries respond, we do it again???

"President Donald Trump said Friday he would impose a 100% tariff on China “over and above any Tariff they are currently paying” effective November 1 – massively escalating his trade war amid a heated dispute over export controls on rare earths."

It is one emotional action after another. How many times have China imports been adjusted up and down? I have lost count.

Did we not think through that they would use their world monopoly which they created through long term planning to get back at us? Wouldn't the better idea than tariffs be investments to assure our supply of rare earth independent of China?

Meanwhile our farmers have not sold a single soy bean this year to China and we have to pony up our tax dollars to compensate them. Not a lick of benefit has come from tariffs. :(

Dr. Toole was kind enough to autograph his latest book and send me a copy. Today I get a FedEx bill for $16.94. The custom form clearly indicates the item was "free." Yet, here I am paying tariff and service charges of this magnitude. And some wonder why I hate these tariffs?

The US Supreme Court struck down the misuse of the law that the president used to tariff nearly every nation in the world in a 6 to 3 vote. What happens to tariffs already paid, is not clear at this point as the court did not articulate. Nor how fast they stop collecting it.

President has other powers to impose tariffs but those are likely not as easily applied to 200 countries as is currently in place. And at any rate, would take him some time to declare those.

So cautiously good news.

President announced a flat 10% global tariff today under an article that allows him to do this for 150 days. Whether this will fully go through, will be seen in the next few days as people try to pressure him to let go.

Very nice interview with the CEO of one of the companies that sued US government on these tariffs which supreme court deemed illegal:

Earlier int he video it also states that FedEx is suing the government to get the tariffs back. That is such a nice development as it means FedEx will in essence be suing on behalf of all of their customers. Me included with our Ascilab imports by air! :)

Lest we think FedEx is really on our side, they were happy to send me a nearly $5,000 tariff bill for the latest import of Ascilab C8C. :( Yes, they arrived a few days before the government stated date of Tuesday. But surely if the government was illegally collecting tariffs, which the supreme court ruled before our shipment landed, they would put up a fight and not keep collecting. But no such luck.
