Why/how do old recordings sound so good?

Indeed it is. I only got that recently (£1 in a charity shop), put it on while I was working on something. I could not concentrate on the work, the vocal is mesmerizingly life-like.

You can actually perceive his body making the sound - not really sure how to describe that in words.

I never heard that before. It's a very sparse mix of course but I did wonder if it's at least party due to being mono?
 
On a somewhat related question, is it just me or were some of the Motown recordings (possibly earlier ones?) were kinda bad. Lots of distortion, limited dynamics, muffled mixes. Was that on purpose?
From what I read they were winning the loudness war at the time WITHOUT excessive distortion. (MOST of my 45's had poor sound and I don't remember Motown being any different.) I believe it was one of the Beatles (probably Paul McCartney or maybe their engineer Geoff Emerick) who asked, "Why can't we get bass like Motown?"

I can't find a reference now but from what I recall, Motown called their process, "Loud and Clear". Part of it was half-speed mastering. I ran across an article about someone found an "unknown" piece of equipment that was some kind of equalizer... It turned-out to be an equalizer that Motown used to set while listening normally, and then they could switch it so it had the same end-result with the tape playing through the EQ at half-speed.

...Another thing I read about Motown was that they were using AR speakers as monitors and blowing the midranges so often that they were keeping spare drivers on hand.

I don't know if it was on purpose, but you're right—a lot of them were very bad. The same can be said for Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound", but in that case, I think it was on purpose, designing the sound to work best on AM radio.

I guess it all depends on what one means when one says WITHOUT excessive distortion. There are a lot of productions in the late 1950s/early 1960s that really pushed recording level. Analog tape can take higher levels than digital recordings without falling apart completely. I do hear a lot of "soft compression" on older analog productions, even on a lot of "audiophile" recordings like the RCA Victor "Living Stereo" and the Mercury "Living Presence" series.

Then again, creating the gear used for recording is science, but creating a recording is art. Motown got the results they wanted

At that time there was no ear bug or sound bar: the treble are in recess without any sibilance.

Listening to older recordings, I'm often gobsmacked by how good they sound. I assume there's more to it than simple compression. Listening to Peggy Lee, recorded mostly in the 50s, and Nat King Cole, 40s, 50s, the quality of the recordings is jaw dropping some times. I have heard there's debates among engineers and related the mics of the time were especially good, but no idea how accurate, or what other variables account for the differences. I find recordings from the 40s, 50s, and early 60s are the best I ever hear on my system. Stream for example Ultimate Peggy Lee some time and see what ye think.
Looked thru some comments but could just be your taste in music primarily....you into vocalists particularly?

Every rule has its exceptions. Tell me exactly what recording it is. I'll listen to it and get back to you.
 
So, let's talk about this. It's more complex than you'd think!

Before the advent of the tape machine, records were made direct to disk. There was no editing or overdubbing possible - everybody had to be playing together, at the same time. Mixers were archaic vacuum tube devices with very few channels (no more than maybe 4-6 channels) - there was no "close miking" other than maybe vocalists.

So what did that mean? The musicians had to be on top of their game. The engineers did too - there were no do-overs or fix it in post. The medium itself has severe limitations on loudness and low end.

By the time we get to the early 50s, we have tape machines with two or even three tracks. This was a gigantic leap in fidelity (seriously - listen to late 40s jazz records vs mid-50s, it's not subtle!), but ultimately the only real changes were that you could splice different takes together and overdub a little bit (maybe a vocal on top of the band, for example). The track count barely changed. Les Paul did some cool things involving layering with two machines, but it was still fairly limited (it did directly inspire George Martin and The Beatles, though - more on that later). Still not much compression being used. The other thing, of course, is tape is much more forgiving about pushing it a little too hard. It compresses a bit rather than having the cutting head jump or overheat.

By the late 50s, some studios (Atlantic Records, with Tom Dowd, in particular) were starting to have as many as 8 tracks available on their reel-to-reel recorders. Now we're starting to have the ability to mix things a bit. But we're still not really close miking anything - EMI, for example, had strict limitations on how close the engineers could put the microphones to a source.

It isn't really until the mid 1960s that putting mics close to anything became a thing - mostly from EMI engineers like Geoff Emerick breaking studio rules! But we're still limited pretty heavily by track count. The Beatles, for example, did all of their records until the White Album on 4 track machines, and the mixing reflects that. A lot of stuff was pre-mixed and summed down to one track. Mixers have become higher channel count by this time; the EMI REDD.51 consoles of the early to mid 60s were able of recording up to 10 channels at a time (summed down to 4 tracks), and UA 610 consoles were around the same channel counts in the US.

By the time we reach the late 60s to early 70s, we're looking at 16 track tape machines, with closing miking becoming ubiquitous. Now mixing starts to be less about just balance and slight tonal adjustments and more a part of the production itself. Consoles from companies like Neve, API, and MCI become commonplace, with high channel counts (24 or more) starting to become the norm. Overdubs are now commonplace, and it is downright normal to put a dozen mics on a drum kit. Heavier use of compression has become more the norm.

It's very normal in pop recordings of the era for it to be quite band limited. Go listen to the first Elvis record, it has no low end or top end to speak of.

I believe the 50s U47 had tube preamps inside of them.
Yes - all condenser mics of the time period used tube head amps. It wasn't until the late 1960s that the FET-based U87 and C414 came about.

Don't know much about the DPA microphones, other than that brand started out as B & K. Those are considered measurement microphones, suitable for measuring speakers and such, though also used for orchestra recordings and other recordings of acoustic sessions. The small diaphragms can push the high frequency resonant peak out of the audible range, but they do this at the price of elevated self-noise compared to large diaphragm condensers. I have worked with the Schoeps small diaphragm microphones. Of course, the old 221B microphones I worked with were very colored. The "Collete" series has its own distinctive color, perfect for recording the harpsichord just as the Neumann KM 84 and AKG 451 are suitable for acoustic guitar. All are small diaphragm microphones. Large diaphragm condensers are more suitable for vocal work. All microphones have colorations. Recording engineers use different microphones for different purposes. I've been assistant engineer at recording sessions for orchestra at Skywalker that involved Neumann, Schoeps and Sennheiser microphones in use at the same time.
Off course that is not black/white, it's a tendency i see in the recording world whre i've also been. But when i was working as assistant for the national radio and we were recording classical pieces, there were also Neumann microphones involved, and i've recorded folk music with schoeps also (for radio broadcast). And clean in the microphone world is also very relative. But what i wanted to say is that coloring microphones are in general better for the job, and the colouration is chosen by the recording engineer to fit the production. R's an audiophile myth that a recording is the exact representtion of how it sounds in the room, that is almost never the case or the goal.
 
There were also a lot of ribbon microphones used back in the day, also for classical music. The famous RCA ribbons were often used for vocals and the Coles (BBC) 4038 as overhead or room mics for drums and classical ensembles. This is the RCA type 44, as used by many singers incls Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley for recordings. It was the main contender for the Neumann U47 and Neumann CMV-3 (the precestor of the U47 from the 1930's) in recording studio's. It's still made (under the brand AEA) and used but it's a very fragile microphone, so the condensors are sturdier and more durable (also a factor for many).

You can't really say that because there is no "calibration" between the two... ;) Tape saturation is a magnetic phenomenon and digital is just a number. And 0dBVU isn't necessarily calibrated to 0dBFS.

Of course overall, digital has far more dynamic range (no tape noise) and pros tend to use tons of headroom, typically recording around -12 to -18dBFS.

But that's TRUE. Analog tape begins to saturate and soft-clip before it's completely saturated and limited. And as tape formulations improved over the years they got more headroom. Plus tape has record/playback equalization which reduces the distortion harmonics and further "softens" the distortion. It's somewhat like a limiter.

Virtually all ADCs and DACs (and "regular WAV files and CDs) are integer based. and 0dBFS is defined as the highest you can "count to" with a given number of bits.* Nothing bad happens when you get close to 0dB but you'll get hard-clipping if you "try" to go over.



* The numbers in a 24-bit file are bigger than a 16-bit file, but everything is automatically scaled for the DAC or ADC so the 24-bit file isn't louder. The added dynamic range is on the quiet-end.

With floating point audio, a numerical value of 1.0 represents 0dBFS and for all practical audio purposes there are no upper or lower limits. I don't remember exactly but I believe it's more than -700dB to +700dB. (Of course nothing the electrical-physical world can handle a range like that.)

Another early recording label Star Records who recorded as early as 1915 at what became Gennett label was responsible some 16000 releases in its history. What is remarkable they recorded some of the earliest African American Jazz greats, such as King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Bix Biderbecke and many others, surprisingly right under the noses of the highly racist Indiana at the time. Later they were responsible for releases by their white copycats and innovators that spanned the the Jazz Age. The history and recording tech and techniques are revealed in this documentary.

If you're interested in the Gennett King Oliver recordings, the Archaeophone remastering is generally considered the best. A few of them are electric but the majority are acoustic. They sound surprisingly good. The John R. T. Davies remasterings are also good but not quite as good. Almost anything Davies did is well worth listening to.

Right, and it happens to be an unrealistic effect—"distortion"—that people happen to like.

I've got one of those theoretically 24 bit handheld recorders, always left about 10db headroom when recording a kid's band off a soundboard, then compressed and maximized levels when I got home. I'm sure there are digital effects/plug--ins that effectively emulate analog tape compression artifacts, though I also understand than some folks still use "pushing the tape into the red", running tracks through analog recorders for that effect.
