Why are threads closed without notice?

I thought you guys are reopening the closed thread in this one :p. It was a fun thread, as noted. The fact that it did not lead anywhere is what made it even more fun. It is the journey that matters, not the destination .

Something tells me @RickS' fingers are already itching to close this thread because it's going off topic... :D

True ... and I understand that. However, we need to remember that there are thousands of non-members - people from all over the world - who scan our forum every day. If the posts that we make help one of our non-English-speaking members, it's very likely that that post can help many other people.
That's why I didn't open a discussion with @Audionaut via PM. It wouldn't help him any more, and it might help visitors a lot less.

To me personally, there is a difference between off-topic posts that are helpful and off-topic posts that are just worthless meandering. I hope the post I made was the former and not the latter.

If it's not going anywhere then it's not a journey, it's just exercise.
Oh c'mon. Semantics? Excuse me, but I play the card "I am not a native English speaker". My wife shouting at me in Slovak, ex-wife in Croatian, while my boss is beating me up in English.

BTW - we should stop or we might be called to justice by the relevant authorities as just shooting crap which is probably not a valid "exercise".

I can always yell orders at you in German if that brightens your day. I know all the jargon. :D

I don't see any cause for concern. There are always one or two red-headed stepchild threads running at any particular time, and more just waiting in the wings
It's the nature of the beast

There are lots of threads already about the value of things, why certain goods don't get recommendations, if recommendations should be based on cost and performance, if ASR is just a bunch of haters who dislike expensive gear. Sometimes the questions and threads are posed in good faith.

But probably not in this latest installment aka 'Why most users here HATE'...
Which was ironic given who posted it.

In that case: «Raus!»
Right - forgot to mention my oldest daughter that is learning German. She also raises her teenage voice while practicing German to something like she needs more support from me and more understanding for her teenage crap. Younger one is learning Japanese. Oldest son Arabic. So yeah, I am really challenged and this linguistic disarray is a bit much.

All I want is humble house on a remote island where someone (really nice) would speak to me only the language of love . And of course 100mbs internet connection.

Want peace and quiet? Need help clearing out the place? Worry not, but call the professionals.

We might want to move to this thread. Sounds like fun. Incredible how crap options just seem to appear when you need them.

The magic lives in the phonemes.

Will just add a few comments as others have made good points here already:
  1. All threads are not created equal, so as moderator/curator do my best to be clear and fair about their value. You may feel differently...
  2. As Amir has stated, ASR is not a democracy, and some votes will count more than others. ASR is diverse as well and so can expect all of us will not always agree. As I have stated previously, may not fit your idea of an ideal moderator. I do work with Amir (was not always the case in the past), he has emphasized that I can act as a member, moderator or curator as I see fit. I get this may be confusing. I do have a dedicated thread for feedback but consider that I am human too. Like most folks, if you are considerate enough to consult me privately, you are likely to get a better response than if am called out publicly.
  3. As for the thread referenced in the OP, I stated I was suggesting it be closed. Note, as have stated in the past, feel free to direct message me about your preferences or start a thread of your own. I think we can do better and still have "fun".
Thanks for your support!

I personally want to thank @RickS for helping us enjoy the forum.

We are sometimes out of line or going nowhere, so good to have some compas around. We are afforded a great deal of leniency and have fun with lots of off topic and otherwise irrelevant posts. In my opinion, that builds the community, especially between the members with few stripes and good intentions, so I really keep enjoying this forum.

I got spanked once (or twice?) but I might have been over the line. I am trying to keep it light and entertaining as we all have bigger fish to fry and this should be safe and fun place to relax after hard day's work.

Thanks for the explanation, Rick.
So if any questions come up, I’d prefer to send you a private message.
If you’d like to close this thread, I don’t think anyone would mind.

Thanks for your hard work @RickS, I am sure it's even harder than it looks, keeping this place usable.

From what I've observed, threads get closed when the thread tilts firmly toward insults, unproductive bickering, or off-topic rambling. Due to something like entropy I think most long-lived active threads end up there. I haven't seen many (any?) good or insightful discussions cut short.

Have a like for using "entropy".

Such a good word to describe things. Criminally unrated.

Staying on topic is not strong with humans :)
